Windows NT (New technology) indicates the series of operating systems préemptif Multitâche, Multi-utilisateur, Multiprocesseur, created by Microsoft and not having basic commune with the historical system of Microsoft, derived MS-DOS and its OS such as Windows 3.11.
History
Whereas the first versions of Windows were published and brought a Graphical interface in MS-DOS, several developments took place in parallel for the creation of an operating system not having to carry the history of Compatibilité of MS-DOS.
These developments were in particular made in partnership with IBM in the project OS/2 but, in 1990, Microsoft decided the stop of this partnership to concentrate, only, on the development of Windows NT.
David NR. Cutler, a former employee of DIGITAL (where it was one of the people charged with VMS) engaged by Microsoft in August 1988, had the direction of the project.

The name
The fact that David NR. Cutler is an old developer of VMS is the cause of the rumor wanting that WNT was named according to VMS (while passing each letter with following). Officially, NT means “New Technology” . SeeSee the first version of core NT

Evolutions
For a long time, Windows NT coexisted with the historical branch, derived from MS-DOS, in the offer of products of Microsoft and the final passage to Windows NT for all the range of operating system (as well “general public” as “undertaken”) took place finally only with the exit of Windows XP, in 2001.
Branch NT also gave rise to another project, ReactOS
