More (Unix)
more is a order standard under Unix used for to see (but not to modify) the contents of a file text, page by page.
History
The order more was creates by Daniel Halbert, a student with the the University of California to Berkeley, in 1978. It was initially introduced into version 3.0 of BSD then became a standard order for all the system Unix. A clone of more was introduced into MS-DOS.
Use
The Syntaxe of this order is the following one:
more of fichier
If no file is specified, more uses the standard entry Stdin .
When more has sufficient input data, it posts some as much as possible in the current window and on standby puts return of the user to post the continuation. In the left lower corner of the window the message is posted " --More--" with the percentage of the text already posted (in this percentage the text currently with the screen is included/understood). The order more finishes when it reaches the end of the file (100%). Navigation with the order more is done mainly while supporting on the key entrée what posts the following line of the file, or by the key espace what posts the following page.
Other orders can be used to sail in a file, to see the page man of more for more details.
Options
The options normally passed in argument before the name of the file, but they can also be put in the variable of environment $MORE. The options provided on the line of order take the step on the variable $MORE. The options available depend on the operating system, here are most current:
; -num
- num is an entirety indicating the size in lines of the screen
- more posts the message " on the bar of spacing to continue, “Q” for quitter." to ravel and the message " “H” to obtain the instructions." instead of emitting a beep when one presses on a prohibited key
- Normalement more considers that ^L (form feed) is a special character and waits after each line containing a form feed. The option - L removes this behavior.
- causes a logical counting of the lines, i.e. the long lines are not cut out.
- not to unroll: erase the screen before posting the text.
- not to unroll: post the lines on the basis of the top and erasing the ends of line progressively.
- Gathers the consecutive white lines in only one.
- Removes the underlining.
- the option + indicates a text to be sought in each file before posting it. (E.g.: more +/Preambule gpl.txt )
- Starts with the line indicated.
