Moosonee

Moosonee is a Canadian city located in north of the Ontario. It is the terminus of the Railroad Ontario Northland, on the Baie James. The goods are transferred there on barges or planes to be distributed in communautées the more Scandinavian. Moosonee is not very far in north (51°N) but is insulated because of the lack of road bonds towards the remainder of Ontario. The community was the site of a station of draft of the fur founded in 1903 by Revillon Frères, candidates of the Compagnie of Hudson Bay, which repurchased Revillon later.

Transport

Moosonee is inaccessible by the road. The road nearest is in Otter Rapids, which is with more than 148 kilometers in the south of Moosonee. The principal means of transport are the train. The goods and passenger train Little Bear makes three return tickets per week and the tourist train Polar Bear Express makes of them six per week during the summer only. There is a daily air service of Moosonee with Timmins and Moosonee towards other communities more in north. Summer until the beginning of the autumn, the goods can be transported until Moosonee by Barge. During the winter, roads are maintained on the ice of the Moose River until Moose Factory and the coastal communities of Fort Albany, Kashechewan and Attawapiskat.

Demography

The population of Moosonee is of approximately 3  000 inhabitants (estimate of the municipal government; the figures of census 2001 of Statistique Canada for Moosonee are incomplete, a frequent problem with several distant communities). More than 80% of the population consists of autochtones Cris.

Education

Moosonee has two elementary schools, the Public school of Moosonee and the separate School Bishop Belleau (roman catholic) which offer courses of the nursery school until the eighth year. The School Bishop Belleau gets also a Unit of teaching in French language. There is also a secondary school, Northern Lights Secondary, which gets courses of the ninth to the twelfth year. The campus of the Northern College in Moosonee gets certain programs postsecondaires.

Health

The Moosonee private clinic of the General hospital of the Bay James gets the health care.

Communication

Moosonee has a local radio, CHMO 1450 AM, more of the repeat broadcast of CBC Northern Ontario with to start from Sudbury on 1340 AMNDT the television of CBC and TV Ontario have transmitters of repeat broadcast in Moosonee. The majority of the houses have cable television or by sattelite to improve the transmission.
