Monument with the Unknown soldier of the mount Swallowed

The Monument with the Unknown soldier (in Serb Cyrillic Serb СпоменикНезнаномјунаку and in transliterated Spomenik Neznanom junaku) is a monumental Sculpture located at the top of the mount Avala, in the south-east of Belgrade, the capital of the Serbia. It was created by the Croatian Sculpteur Ivan Meštrović.

Presentation

The construction of the Monument to the Unknown soldier of the Mount Swallowed was ordered by the king Alexandre Ier of Yugoslavia to commemorate the victims of the First World War. The dates indicated on the monument, 1912-1918, widen the commemoration with the dead soldiers at the time of the Balkan wars of 1912 and 1913.

Realized between 1934 and 1938 with the site of old the Fortress of Žrnov, work is a structure in black Marbre of neo-classic invoice : the tomb is decorated of Caryatide S supporting the roof. These statues, appearing the mothers symbolic systems of the soldier, are eight: they represent the people and the nations joined together within new the Royaume of Yugoslavia.

A monumental staircase gives access the building. Located at an altitude of 511 meters, the Monument with the Unknown soldier offers a vast point of view on the town of Belgrade.
