Montyon price

The price Montyon is a whole of prices created on the initiative of Jean-Baptiste Auget of Montyon and decreed by the French Academy and the Academy of Science.

Jean-Baptiste de Montyon had founded three prices, all three called Montyon prices. The two first are decreed by the French Academy: the first under the denomination of price of virtue, given to deserving people, the second, price for the literary work most useful for manners, was given for the first time in 1782. The third is a scientific price given by the Academy of Science.

The price of Virtue was mentioned many times by Balzac in its novels and highly criticized by various authors such as Remy de Gourmont or Charles Baudelaire because of the ostentatious aspect of the charity which it rewards. Baudelaire also disapproved the prizes awarded to those which make a literature containing finer feelingss.

In 1976, the new Montyon price of literature is consisted regrouping of the prices and the foundations Montyon, Louis Boudenoot, Capuran, Constant Dauguet, Dodo, Juteau-Duvigneaux, Fabien, Furtado, Marcellin Guerin, Halphen, of Jouy, Lafontaine, Louis P. Miller, Nicolas Missarel, Helene Porgès, Saint-Cricq, Sobrier-Arnould, Paul Teissoniere and Maurice Trubert. As before, it is intended “to the French authors of the works most useful for manners, and advisable by a character of rise and moral utility”
