Montville

Montville is a common French, the department of the Seine-Maritime and the area High-Normandy. This commune located just at a score of kilometers in the north of Rouen belongs to the Canton of Clères. The inhabitants of Montville are Montvillais and Montvillaises.

Geography

Montville is located in France in the area of High-Normandy, between country of the Seine and Pays of Bray. The commune is crossed by two rivers: the Clérette which is thrown in the Cailly.

History

August 19th, 1845 violent a waterspout of standard F5 falls down on the city, destroying factories.

The Notre-Dame church of the assumption

The Notre-Dame church of the Assumption has a bell-tower dating from the 11th century. Its more recent heart is of XVe and 16th century.

  • Mgr of Aubigné, archbishop of Rouen, pays a pastoral visit on Wednesday, June 2, 1717. It orders several work to be carried out: to give some boards to the skirtings of the sacristy, to add a small grid which misses with the confessional, to reload the cover of the chorus and to repair that of the sacristy. The titles and other papers of the Factory will be deposited in a closing trunk with keys.   • the church is the central point of the commune until the first revolution: it is called for this agitated period the Supreme Temple Être.

  • In 1802, the roof and the stained glasses undergo important repairs.

  • In 1840, the city proposes the construction of a jubé cradle and one.

  • As from 1853, of many projects is worked out to increase the church, to put the nave at the same height as the chorus. Work of this enlarging is carried out during the years 1859 and 1860. The factory allocates a sum of 4.000 francs for the extension of the places of worship. The city carries out a loan, six subscribers lend 18.500 francs to the commune (three Montvillais appear among these subscribers). This sum plus the interests with 5% are refundable in 10 years.

  • the sculpture above the gate is entitled: bouquet of the door.

  • the Beffroi of the Clocher is consolidated in 1864 and 83 steps 18 cm height give access the bells of the church. The bell-tower, approximately a 20 m height, seems unfinished.

  • on December 24th, 1902, a fire bursts in the church. The inventory of 1905 mentions 6 statues:

  • a statue of saint Antoine de Padoue;
  • two statues of the Blessed Virgin;
  • a statue of the Jesus child;
  • a statue of holy Clotilde;
  • a statue of Joseph saint.
  • In 1907, part of the roof is repaired.

  • In 1913, Mr. Charpentier paints the 14 paintings of the Way of Cross, renovated in 1987 thanks to the skill of an municipal employee (carpenter-cabinetmaker of formation).

  • In 1928, the municipality decides to carry out work of cleaning inside the building.

  • lighting is installed with the bell-tower in 1935. The frontages of the church profit from a repair (given in state) in 1955.

  • the deliberation of the municipal council of November 25th, 1961 authorizes Mr. the Abbot to deposit the flesh and the glosses.

  • the city carries out the acquisition of a harmonium in 1980.

  • In 1981, the total repair of the church is necessary: 35.000 slates, 300 kg of hooks stainless, 6506 m liteaux (wood rod nailed against the frame to be used as support with slate) etc This work important and delicate is entrusted to a company of cover montvillaise. A new cock is blessed and installed at the top of the bell-tower.

  • In 1986, the interior of the church is entirely restored, just as that of the sacristy. This project conceived and carried out by a young architect rouennais: Bertrand Vaslet. The clock

  • Since 1984, the bell-tower of the church has a new automatic electric clock.

Stained glasses

  • the 7 windows which clarify the chorus have a colored window carrying the dates of 1527,1529. We notice there the life of our Lord and holy Jean the Saints, the Holy ones honoured in our region.

  • the stained glasses represent amongst other things, Saint Romain, holy with a palm and a sword, a martyr holding several arrows with a quiver with its feet. The nimbus of each character is placed in a decorated shell of arabesques or flowers with gold stems.

  • on August 25th, 1897, the Minister for the State education and the Art schools arrives. The stained glasses of the 16th century existing in the church of Montville are classified among the historic buildings.

During the year 1907, the city carries out the repair of the stained glasses. During the Second world war, the stained glasses of the church are deposited in one of the cellars of the castle leaning the church. After the war, those went up and restored.
  • the stained glasses of the church of Montville are protected by nettings and are permanently maintained.

Bells

  • the blessing of the Cloche S is reproduced sometimes on the parochial registers. First place in 1622 has. The large bell is bénite on April 7th, 1693. They is replaced on August 26th, 1780 and takes the Marie-Angelica name.

The first weighs 453 kg and appoints Antoinette in the honor of the first name of the wife of Mr. Mayor of Anceaumeville. The second weighs 840 kg and appoints Louise in the honor of the first name of the wife of Mr. mayor of Eslettes. The last weighs 840 kg and names Victoire in the honor of the third first name of the wife of Mr. Hommais, mayor of Montville. The first names of Mrs. Hommais born Legrelle are Antoinette, Arsène and Victoire. Each bell measures 90 cm height approximately and 110 cm diameter approximately. They are restored in 1951. The following year, their movement is electrified.

Inscriptions on the church

  • on February 14th, 1887, the municipal council decides that the currency is “freedom, equality, fraternity” must be registered on the communal public monuments.

The relationship between the municipality and the clergy is not always cordial. The city having financed most of the enlarging of the church is authorized to enter the currency on the collateral one. It is also allowed to register: “French Republic” on the bell-tower which always belongs to the Factory until the separation of the Church and the State in 1905.
  • the inscriptions are affixed on the frontage of our church on October 12th, 1887 by a painter of a common neighbor.

Museum of the firemen of France

  • Montville shelters the national Musée firemen of France. This museum contains the enthralling history of the men of fire, on 2000 m ², within a contemporary framework, exceptional and prestigious collection: pumps with arm, motorized vehicles of fire, helmets, uniforms, engravings and documents of time. The whole of the exposed parts forms a homage vibrating to the profession, of which it recalls 3 centuries of history (the vehicles and motor-driven pumps, the great names of the French automobile history: Delahaye - Laffly - Hotchkiss - Somua - Berliet - Of Dion-Button).

Water level

  • Montville has a water level of 3 hectares on which it is possible to make Pédalo. Around this water level, one finds a garden watery and a Arboretum, an ornithological reserve, a sociocultural and sporting complex, a course of health, an adventure playground as well as a Minigolf 18 holes.

The manor of Wood-Isambert

  • the manor of Wood-Isambert dating from the 17th century makes it possible to accommodate the music school like various clubs or associations.

Personalities related to the commune

  • Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) remained in his/her friend, the baron Hippolyte Boissel, between 1845 and 1847, in the park of the castle close to the church. It developed at it the Damnation of Faust .
  • Andre Martin (1926-1993), teacher, mayor of Montville of 1959 to 1993, general secretary of the National federation of the Offices of HLM and the OPAC, it was a few months President of the General advice of the Seine-Maritime and Senator following the deaths close to Jean Lecanuet and Geoffroy de Montalembert.
