History

  • Called Montsauches as of 1285, the Fief of Saulce depended on the Comté of Castle-Chinon. Baillage Saint-Pierre it Moûtier.

As for the Parish, St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, it depended on the Abbaye of Saulieu. In the beginning, it was divided in two collections of which one depended on the Election of Castle-Chinon and the other of the Election of Nevers (Généralité of Mill). They were joined together in 1776 only one with the Election of Castle-Chinon.
  • the village was mainly destroyed on June 25th 1944 by the German troops which were withdrawn, then rebuilt. During this terrible tragedy the communal collection of the parochial registers (held in town hall since the French revolution) disappeared in smoke. 40 years later, on June 25th 1984, President François Mitterrand paid homage to the ravaged village, by revealing a commemorative plaque.
