Montreuil-the-weak is located at the south-western end of Maine Normand, about at equal distance between Sillé-the-Guillaume and Fresnay-sur-Sarthe.

History

The name of Montreuil would originate in Monasteriolum or Montralium (small monastery or small church). As for the weak word (of Latin captivus), it would come from what the incomes of certain churches belonging to the cathedral of Mans were intended for the repurchase of the prisoners; however Montreuil the Weak one belonged to the church of Mans.

With the XII° century, the old church of Montreuil was only one vault built in a country of moors. Later, one added a chorus and a transept to it.
