History
Montpelliérain Olympic stadium
The Montpelliérain Olympic stadium is founded with the beginning of the year 1919 and adopts the colors of its city: red and white. As of the beginning, the club somist amalgamates with the Life with the Great outdoors of Languedoc, general sports club almost only dedicated to football, founded in 1914. The club of president Robert evolves/moves then with the Park with Balloons (today Lycée Mermoz). The initial name undergoes some changes with time: Olympic sports Montpélliérains, then Montpelliérain Olympic stadium again. It should be noted that in 1941 and during 3 seasons, the club is forced to amalgamate with the USM, the club of Rugby montpelliérain and takes the name of USOM.
The beginnings of the club are blazing. The SOM terrace the giant sétois finally of the Cut of the Medoc as of 1919! This first title gives to the ascending SOM decisive vis-a-vis the multitude of clubs montpelliérains. In 1920, the SOM inaugurates the Stage of the Paddles. This last not being enclosed, the receipts are starveling. Requiring work at the company owner of the stage, the club is found expelled in August 1922. The club is established then with the Parc of the Sports of the avenue Pont Juvénal, located at 600 meters of the place of the Comedy, whose installations are inaugurated the September 30th 1923. The club is owner of this sports complex financed by leaders and patrons.
At the end of the season 1927-1928, the SOM gains the prestigious championship of the League of South-east in front of FC Sète. It is thus qualified for the final stage of the Championship of France Excellence and fails in semi-finals vis-a-vis the French Stade.
The year 1929 is that of the apotheosis. After having eliminated Annemasse, SO of the East, FC Mulhouse, the Stage Of Rennes and Stage Raphaëlois, the SOM reaches the finale of the Coupe de France of football which will see to clash two clubs héraultais: the SOM and FC Sète. The May 5th 1929, SOM gains the Coupe de France of football following a cripé match. The somists assert 2-0 (goals of the Kramer brothers: Titi and Edmond) and bring back the cut to Montpellier. The SOM finds the records of the finale of the Coupe de France in 1931, but fails vis-a-vis the Parisian ones of the French Club (0-3).
Still champion of League of South-east in 1932, the SOM passes professional in 1932 and thus takes part in the first championship of the first division with 19 other clubs pioneers. The SOM preserves its place among the professionals of 1932 to 1969 by alternating passages in D1 and D2.
At the time of season 1967/1968, the SOM gives up its old man Parc of the Sports of the avenue Pont Juvénal to join new the Stade Richter. This removal will cause the disaffection of the public, which is not recognized in this new too large stage, icy, and more far from the downtown area. The receipts are done rare (750 spectators at the time of SOM-Nancy in D2, in 1969). In great financial problems, the SOM gives up the professional statute and is relegated in CFA.
SOM in Montpellier Herault SC
In 1969, the SOM gives up the professional statute and sets out again in CFA. One year later, it is transformed into Montpellier Littoral after fusion with the old Sport Club of Montpellier, created in 1908 (senior of the clubs montpelliérains). This fusion gives rise to the Montpellier Littoral Sport Club which is fished out in D2 (on file). In 1974, new fusion between Montpellier Littoral SC relegated in DH and the ACE Paillade: the new club takes the name of Montpellier Paillade Sport Littoral Club then of Montpellier Paillade Sport Club (MPSC). It keeps the colors red and white of Montpellier Littoral Sport Club and evolves/moves with the Stade of Mosson, small stage of district where the ACE Paillade evolved/moved. Nevertheless, until in 1977, certain meetings " importantes" will be played at Stage Ritcher, old stage of the SOM and Montpellier Littoral Sport Club. In November 1974, Louis Nicollin, hitherto president of a corporative club (Sporting Formation of Cleaning) is called by the leaders of the MPSC, with the anguish in DH. It " dissout" then its club corpo and " transfère" its players with Paillade whose it assumes the chairmanship.
The club becomes professional in 1978. Under the crook of this new president, the club knows a fulgurating rise then. The club climbs with insurance and celerity the levels which lead to the elite, reaching the first division at the conclusion of the championship 1980 - 1981. The captains Fleury Di Nallo and Michel Mézy as well as the trainers Robert Nouzaret and Kader Firoud are the large craftsmen of the success of the club. However, the experiment in the first division turns short since the club cannot avoid relegation the following season.
In 1989, the club is renamed Montpellier-Herault Sport Club and writes the most beautiful pages of its history, by playing the very first parts in the first division and in Coupe de France, trophy gained in 1990, grace in particular to the Colombian Carlos Valderrama, with Laurent Blanc and Eric Cantona. At the time of the season 1990 - 1991, MHSC is the author of a remarkable course in Coupe of the Winners of Cut: after having successively beaten PSV Eindhoven (1-0 in residence, 0-0 outside) and the Steaua Bucharest (5-0 then outside 3-0), the club yields only in quarterfinals vis-a-vis the future winner, Manchester United (1-1 outside then 0-2). This European course reveals the young talents which are Laurent Blanc, Vincent Guerin and Patrick Colleter. During the following decade, Montpellier one is accustomed of the soft belly of the first division, tasting only with three new recoveries with the European competitions (1996, 1997 and 1999).
At the conclusion one season 1999 - 2000 extremely disappointing in spite of a Stage of Mosson new bright burning coal, an ambitious recruitment and a qualification in Cut Of UEFA via the Intertoto, the club goes down in the second division after thirteen seasons spent among the elite. At the end of the season 2002 - 2003, the way carried out with bicycle by the trainer Gerard Bernardet to Doors in extremis to celebrate the maintenance of Héraultais among the elite, does not avoid relegation at the time of the following exercise. Again in League 2, and after two seasons of transition, the club intends to find the Ligue 1 as fast as possible with Jean-François Domergue but after three catastrophic seasons, the club separates from this last, whereas relegation in National threatens.
It is then Roland Courbis which takes again the team in hand on April 29th, 2007 for an operation commando: to save the team of relegation whereas there remain only 4 matches to be played… The first match under the command of Roland Courbis turns to the nightmare: With the 93e minute, on a corner pain-killer, and whereas the MHSC makes good match with Cristoliens, the captain emblematic of the club marks against its camp on a goal cap. At the time of the 36e day in a stage supporting its team of the beginning until the end, Montpellier takes a lead in its lawn vis-a-vis Le Havre on the score of 2-1. They are however the visitors who open the mark by Alla. But the players of Roland Courbis equalize by Lamine Sakho before Bedimo, on a center of Sakho, marks against its camp, allowing Montpellier empocher 3 points invaluable in the race with the maintenance. May 18th, 2007, for the 37e day, the men of Roland Courbis move with Ajaccio for a match with strong stake. Montpelliérains are essential by 2 goals on 0. Jerome Lafourcade opens the score in second pérode before Lamine Sakho does not confirm the victory thanks to a second drank a few minutes afterwards. MHSC definitively saves relegation in National at the time of the last day thanks to a victory 1-0 vis-a-vis the Grenoble Foot 38, on May 25th, 2007, over a goal registered by Victor Hugo Montaño on Pénalty.
