Montournais

Montournais is a common French, located in the department of the the Vendée and the area Pays of the Loire.

Geography

Located at 52 kilometers of the Roche-sur-Yon, prefecture of the the Vendée, the town of Montournais is located in the middle of the Vendean Bocage. It belongs to the community of communes of the Country of Pouzauges.

Montournais is located at 7 kilometers of Saint-Mesmin, commune made famous for Georges Simenon which lived several years there, and with 4 kilometers of Réaumur, stronghold of the famous French scientist Rene-Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur (1683-1787).

History

The history of Montournais goes up with the Neolithic . In one testifies to the principal polished stone and cut flint sites noted in the Vendée. Still visible Roman ways attest Roman presence with Montournais.

Places and monuments

The town of Montournais is famous for its Eglise Notre-Dame , built on several occasions between XIe and the end of the 15th century. The monument is mainly Gothic, even if the church preserved some elements of the Romance time (bell-tower). It has a double nave, originality which was worth to him to be classified historic building. Its stained glasses, which represent the childhood of Christ, were carried out by Clamens, an artist angevin.

the New House of Montournais is a home dating from XVe century. Old strong house surrounded by one garden to the Frenchwoman and broadside of an artificial lake, the home was the place of turning of the film the Farm of Hung of Jean Dréville, with as main actors Charles Vanel and Bourvil (1945).

the castle of Tourtelière (XIXè century) until 1997 sheltered the free Teacher training school of the Vendée known as Teacher training school of Tourtelière . The institution then was moved with Pouzauges, and names from now on Lycée Notre-Dame of Tourtelière de Pouzauges .

Personalities related to the commune

During the second world war, Pierre Barouh took refuge in Montournais to escape the exactions Nazis. He says to be himself inspired of his memories of childhood in Montournais when he composed the song " The bicyclette" , interpreted thereafter by Yves Montand.
