Montmélian

Montmélian is a common French, located in the department of the Savoy and the area the Rhone-Alps.

Geography

Montmélian is a commune of the Combe of Savoy, located at 10 km in the South-east of Chambéry. It is located on Right Bank of the Isere.

History

Etymology

The common car its name of the site " mons" (mount, projecting relief) and " meillan, mélian" meaning center crowned .

Blazon: " mouths, with the chief also of mouths charged with a cross of argent"

History of the borough

The site accommodates a citadel moyenâgeuse, not strategic in the Combe of Savoy, between the steps from the Dauphine, the cluse chambérienne, and downstream from the intra-alpine valleys of Maurienne and Tarentaise, and beyond the Italy. It is the chief town of the province of Savoy Propre.

Thomas II of Piedmont (1199-1259), count de Piémont (1245) was born with Montmélian.

The citadel is destroyed in 1706, on order of Louis XIV. The hill which accommodated it is naked today and became a view-point.
