History

Old capital of the county of Chiny. The count de Chiny raises there in 1220 a strong castle, the castle of Mady, which will give its name to the city. After being last to the dukes of Luxembourg and being thus incorporated a few times in the Spanish Monarchy, it was attached to France by the Traité of the Pyrenees.

The city is taken in June 1657 by Vauban (it is about the first seat which he directs).

In 1791, at the time of its escape, the king Louis XVI is awaited Montmédy. Recognized, it will be stopped with Varennes-in-Argonne.
