Montlouis-sur-Loire
Montlouis-sur-Loire is a common French, located in the department of Indre-et-Loire and the area Center.
Its inhabitants is called the Montlouisiens, Montlouisiennes .
Geography
This commune is located on left bank of the the Loire at 16 kilometers upstream of Tours, and at 230 km of Paris.
History
As of the the Middle Ages, Montlouis developed thanks to its port on the the Loire, inland waterway very much used, and by its wine activity. The Rebirth mark a golden age. Then the port activity is degraded little by little because of the stranding of the river. Montlouis becomes a primarily rural and agricultural commune then, always with the wine.

Twinning
Montlouis-sur-Loire is twinned with two foreign cities:Appenweier (Germany, 9722 inhabitants), since 1975. Castelvetro di Modena (Italy, 9549 inhabitants), since 2002.
Economy
Vine growing
AOC Montlouis-sur-Loire extends on 300 ha on the communes from the Lussault-on-Loire, Saint-Martin-the-Beautiful and Montlouis-sur-Loire. It is a white Wine declined in dryness, marrowy, effervescent and produced by only one Cépage: the white Chenin.
Places and monuments
- the castle of Bourdaisière. It currently shelters the academy of the Tomate (nearly 500 varieties).
- St. Lawrence Church: partly 12th century. In 1905, one engraved “Freedom Equality Fraternity” on the frontage. The presbytery of the 14th century would have sheltered the loves of Henri IV and Gabrielle d' Estrées.
- the House of the Loire: since 1986, it makes discover the cultural heritage and naturalness of the river.
Personalities related to the commune
- Gabrielle d' Estrées was born there towards 1571.
- Michel Debré born in 1912, is deceased there in 1996.
