Presentation

  • Montilly on Noireau, commune of a little more than 800 inhabitants, owes his fame with:

The fair Denis Saint.

The fair Saint Denis is one of most famous of the area. If one believes an old popular tradition of it, it was held at the origin with Saint Denis-of-Mother, to 7 km; only, the assembly, took place with Montilly. The things would have changed following a toss of the dice between the lord of Montilly, or rather of Beaumanoir, and that of Mother. This one played its fair and that one its castle. Mother lost the part, and since, the fair Saint Denis is probably held in Montilly since the beginning of the XVIIIe century.

After the revolution of 1789, the commune accepted responsibility for the organization of this demonstration and transplanted it with the borough in second half of the XIXe century. From 1960, the fair knew an exceptional growth and it extends on 25 ha including 16 ha of car park. The common one thus had to carry out many investments to make it possible to accommodate the exhibitors and the 120 to 130 thousand visitors.
