Montigny - on Loing common is small a French, located in the department of Seine-et-Marne and the area Île-de-France, at the edge of the Loing.

Its inhabitants is called Montignons (Montignonnes)

Geography

Montigny-on-Loing is in the middle of the forest of Fontainebleau. The village, which counts 2836 inhabitants, is crossed by the Loing.

History

The village is mentioned in XIe century under the name of Monteniae .

At the XIXe century, the village shelters the general Polish Tadeusz Kosciuszko which saves the area of plunderings of the soldiers cossacks of 1814.

At the time of the second world war, 17 let us montignons illustrate themselves in resistance through group VPO (Voluntary Resistance movement Country and Working), several die as a martyr: Renee Montgermont (1893 - October 2nd 1943 hung in its cell), Raymond Frot (1897 - October 19th 1943 off-set with Mauthausen), Raoul Jacobé (1891 - December 12th 1943 off-set with Neuengamme), or Roger Genty (1922 - August 17th 1944 shot in plain of Chanfroy with 36 other resistant).

The village is released the August 23rd 1944 by a detachment of the 5th Division of Infantry of IIIe Armée American with the General Patton.

Another figure of resistance, Aime Lepercq stopped in 1944 and released at the time of the German rout, it was named Minister for Finance by the general De Gaulle. He died one month later in an car accident.

Famous characters

  • Tadeusz Kościuszko, general Polish, political refugee with Montigny. Kosciuszko is installed (on the territory of the commune of Genevraye, in the castle of Berville, and takes part there actively in the life of the commune and with that of Genevraye, it creates there inter alia a tilery. During the invasion of 1814, it intervenes to stop the cossacks of Platow who put the neighborhoods at fire and blood. Its tomb with is always orée of the forest of Fontainebleau where it receives each year a flowered homage.

  • With the turning of the 19th century and 20th centuries, the village of Montigny-on-Loing is the place of stay of many painters like Eugene Thirion (1839-1910), Adrien Schulz (1851-1931), Numa Gillet (1868-1940) and Lucien Cahen-Michel (1888-1980), all attracted by the quality of the landscapes and the light.
  • Guy of Maupassant (1850-1893), French writer, resided at Montigny-on-Loing, lane of Talbarderie, and wrote its last novel, " there; Our Heart ".

Located on the ground of an old career, this protected area shelters many species of birds, batrachians and mammals wild. A way makes of it the turn, it leads to two observatories (provided with glasses of observation!) allowing to observe the birds in any discretion. If the access to the zone east prohibited with the public in normal weather, of the exits sets of themes in group is regularly organized by the Tourist office of Montigny on Loing.
