Monthermé
Monthermé is a common French, located in the department of the the Ardennes and the area Champagne-Ardenne.
Geography
Located in the solid mass of Ardenne, the commune of Monthermé developed on both sides meander of the Meuse and one of its principal affluents, the Semoy. On the Tops , the variation of the High-Ridged is, since the 18th century, a place of worship dedicated to Saint-Anthony .At the geological plan, Monthermé is located in limit of the Cambrien and the Dévonien, marked in this part of Ardenne by a conglomerate, relic of an offshore bar called the conglomerate of Fépin. One can observe this one with the locality of the Roche in Corpias .
History
As much small communes, the origin of Monthermé is not known with exactitude. The same applies to the name of the borough, which could be a deformation of hermès, name given to Gallic heaps of stones, or Hermel Saint, bishop missionary of “Pagus Arduenensis”. The geographical location of the borough, in limit of the goods of the Priory of Price them Wall, founded by Arnould IV of Rethel which brings the oldest known written mention of its existence: 1068.
With XIIe Wither century, Count de Rethel, based several Abbeys on the grounds which belonged to him. Thus, it founded in 1128, in Monthermé the Abbey of Laval God intended for regular Canons about Prémontré under the Term of Saint Remi. In 1148, it made build the Cistercian abbey of Dash in 1148, located in the area of the Crêtes préardennaises . It is also of this time that are dated the oldest elements from the Saint-Leger church, parish of the borough. Monthermé, which belongs to Châtellenie de Château Regnault, enters successively the House of Flanders, the house of Burgundy, of Own way then of Conti which yield to Louis XIII in 1629.
Monthermé saw exploitation of the forest as well as several salte quarries. The year 1749 sees appearing a glassmaking near the Abbey of Laval God and, in 1765, one builds the first puddling furnaces. It is on this sector, located between the Meuse and Semois that concentrate, still today principal industries of the commune.

points of view
The commune of Monthermé offers, by its geographical position with the confluence of the Meuse and of Semoy and its establishment in a loop of the Meuse, a whole of points of sights allowing to see the commune under various angles. Some of these sites, like that of the Rock at 7 a.m., also makes it possible to the walker to observe schist outcrops of which certain benches slaters which were exploited in this sector. Since this site, the visitor will be able to also see this geological, formed curiosity of benches of quarzite evoking, according to the legend, the passage of the 4 Aymon wire in the area (site located and to see on the commune of Bogny-sur-Meuse.
the religious heritage
With its origin, Monthermé counts two basins of population, established around the Saint-Leger church and of the Abbey of Laval God.
the Saint-Leger church
The oldest parts, including/understanding the northern wall of the nave, the transept crossing and the northern brace are dated from XIIe century. The building was mainly destroyed in 1445 by an incursion of Flayers. Rebuilt, it was devoted in 1452 by the Juvénal archbishop of Ursins. The building knew several modifications, in particular during the Wars of religion where it was strengthened. Inside, one can observe a baptismal tank of XIIe century. The high altar, out of marble, would have been carried out in 1783 by an artist of Charleville, François Feuillat. To also see, frescos of XVIe century. The building was classified Historic building in 1959.
the abbey of Laval God
The abbey was founded in 1128, with the confluence of the Meuse and Semoy. The church of the community was destroyed by an arson during the night from August 16th to 17th 1696. The western frontage of the building was repaired three years later. It is within this Community that Méhul will be exerted, under the direction of the Heusser canon. Only the dresser of this organ remains today. One can see also there woodworks of the XVIIe century like several tombstones. The community is dissolved with the French revolution, the sold goods. The buildings are transformed and destroyed, of which a part in 1940.The building was classified with the Historic buildings in 1963.

Monthermé, fatherland of birth of WILLIAM DEGOUVE OF NUNCQUES 1866-1935, painter Symbolist, and post impressionist, known for its landscapes of the turnwrest plow and its mystical and religious subjects. Present at the museums of Brussels, Antwerp, Ixelles.
