2. The Church

The origin of the church is old and closely related to Eveché of Meaux. When the dioceses were formed and to mark their borders, the name of the Saint-Owner given to the parishes was the same one as that of the cathedral on which they depended. This is why, the churches of Montgé and Juilly were dedicated, and others also, Saint-Etienne, like the Meldoise cathedral.

However, a charter, going back to 1496, between the inhabitants and the County of Dammartin lets suppose the existence of a " old church of Saint-Pierre located at the end of the town of Montgé" ; here are which could explain the origin of and street name Saint-Pierre the lane.

The construction of the Saint-Etienne church goes up, for the oldest part, at the 12th century approximately. At that time, one can think that the building was made up only of one vault corresponding to the north-eastern half of the current nave. Successive extensions of XIIIe to the 18th century gave him the form that we know to him. The bell-tower of origin was a surmounted square tower of a cover of tiles with two sides. A large stained glass was in the wall above the furnace bridge; it was stopped about the 18th century.

Before the revolution, the grounds of the cure of Montgé were leased by the priest; thus, in 1683, they brought back 600 pounds tournaments.

The administration of the Goods of the parish was entrusted to a special body called " fabrique" constituted of a council of the faithful ones. In 1712, the grounds of the factory of Montgé were rented with the help of the sum of 80 books.

One can observe, inside the church, of the kinds of blazons painted directly on the walls. It is about " liter" corresponding to the " right of litré" feudal capacity: at the time of the death of a lord, these marks were painted as a sign of mourning: the most worked - three flowers of lily on bottom of azure - represents the weapons of Louis-Henri, Duc of Burgundy, Prince de Condé (1692-1740); the county of Dammartin was then property of the Cop.

In this time there, while the common peoples were buried with the cemetery (current property close to the church, above the place of the Town hall), the notable ones of the country received a burial in the church. For illustration, two tomb stones, of which one goes back to 1629, were in the central alley (one of it is currently located against the wall under the bell-tower). Excavations made it possible to discover remainders up to 1.50 m of depth with sometimes four superimposed burials. In the sub-bases, one discovered four funerary vases, vestiges of the rites of antiquity O one accompanied the late one by instruments of work and food.

Two of these vases contained charcoal, purifier and symbol of fire testifying to a tradition of the 13th century; The two others, empty, have to contain water, another purifying symbol and to remember the baptism corresponding to a rite having had course between XIVe and the XVIIèmè century.

The parochial registers quote the sites of the burials: " near the bénitier" , " under the cloches" , " foot the autel" ,… and teach us that the last burial in the church goes back to 1761: " September 9th: Maurice Pichault, wire of Maurice Pichault, Lawyer at the Parliament - 22 ans".

In these registers the baptism of a bell appears: " the year 1763, twenty May seven, with the permission of Monseigneur the Bishop of Meaux, was blessed undersigned priest Curé of this parish the large bell of this church under the invocation of the Holy-Virgin and that of co. Louise named thus by Philippe Décolasse, marguiller (member of a factory in load of the management of the parish) in load of this factory and Young lady Marie Anne Mouton, girl of Master Simon Mouton tax prosecutor of this place and late Dame Marie Anne Puissieux . Signed: Philippe Took off, Maire Anne Mouton, Bohaire curé".

Broken by " vaillantise" , a new bell came to replace it in January 1825; it is the latter which rate/rhythm daily life of this village; here what one can read above: " I was bénite by Jn Carriel Boillau, priest of Montgez and named Jeanne Colte by Jeanne Colte Levert marries C.J. Pichault of Martinière Knight Intend. soldier - Knight of the orders of St Louis and the Legion of Honor. Godfather Mr. Ecuyer father of the above-named owner in the commune of Montgez Mr. Boisseau, Mayor of Montgez ".

In 1896, a rough-casting of the church was carried out, according to plans approved in Melun by the prefect of the Seine and Marne on August 14th, 1895. A coating was applied to the external walls.

About 1970, yielding to the mode of the time, the interior of the church was " allégé". Work of modernization involved the disappearance of a way of cross out of wooden, glosses, of a table of the XVIIIe representative a religious scene, majority of the benches (on which were reproduced of the copper plates bearing the name of faithful) and especially of a neogothic pulpit carried out by a craftsman of the village Mr. Moritz.

The old stone and terra cotta ground was replaced by a opus slate and one built a new furnace bridge (on a concrete walk!) vis-a-vis the faithful ones according to the rite enacted by Jean XXIII.

It is during this work that the Houillon abbot, impassioned archeology and of history carried out the excavations evoked previously.

The restoration of 1986 aimed to give again with the external walls their original aspect, to put the bell-tower out of water and, hope for it, to develop the heart of our village. It is advisable from now on to consider an interior repairing of the church; fortunately, it appears to have to be simple and not very expensive.
