History

In 1794, the old commune of Coulon was attached to Montfort.
  • Old names: Montfort-the-duck, Montfort-the-Mountain, Montfort-la-Nouaye

  • In 1993, the name of the commune of Montfort becomes officially Montfort-on-Meu.
The site of Montfort-on-Meu preserve traces of its very first inhabitants: shady walks and menhirs of the Neolithic era are visible in forest of Montfort.

The Gallo-Roman period also contributes to the richness of the country.

But it is in XIe century, with the construction of the first castle, that the city takes its rise: military industry and the trade develop to with it quickly. Castle, it remains the tower of Papegault today, built in 1389 out of schist and sandstone. This tower of four stages accommodates Écomusée of the Country of Montfort, which presents many temporary exhibitions or permanent on the history of the country.

For the walkers, the street of Saulnerie is impossible to circumvent: modest houses and middle-class residences of XVIe at the XIXe centuries are côtoient there.

Small strolls to the boulevard of the Dovecote then makes it possible to reconstitute the fortifications.

The legend of the Duck

About 1386, during the completion of the fortifications of the city, the lord made lock up in his castle an young girl of a remarkable beauty. It well quickly included/understood the fate which was reserved to him, and, seeing the church Saint Nicolas, it started to request the saint, promising that it would come to thank it in its church if it escaped. The evening even, it could fuir.
Unfortunately, it fell between the hands from the roughneck soldiers from the lord, who wanted to make him undergo what they supposed that had made their Master. It looked in the neighborhoods to call for the aid, but saw only two wild ducks in the water of the pond (pond which was drained since).
It renewed its prayer with Nicolas saint, begging it to allow that these animals are pilot of its innocence and that they achieve each year his wish on his behalf if it had suddenly lost the life.
It succeeds in escaping the soldiers, but died a little later of fright, says one. It was buried in the Saint Nicolas's Day cemetery.

However, here that the same year, at the time of the festival of the Translation, whereas crowd pressed itself near the relics of Nicolas saint, a wild duck penetrated with its ducklings in the church. It flew close to the image of the Saint, flew to the furnace bridge, and greeted the Crucifix. Then it went down again towards the image of the Saint, and remained there until the end of the mass. At this time, it flew away, followed by all its ducklings, except for one only, which remained in the church.

The history became so famous that, as many documents during the centuries attest some, Montfort-on-Meu was called Montfort-the-Duck during more than 300 years. The appearances are consigned in the official reports several times. The last appearance of the duck dates from the May 8th 1739. However, as only the posterior files in XVe century could be preserved, it misses testimonys enormously, even if like an ecclesiastic " says it; formerly, these facts had become so common that one did not take any more the trouble to announce them .

The Mill of the Boards, located in a peaceful site which invites to the walk, is one of the traces of the agricultural past and tradesman of Montfort-on-Meu, just like red schist the middle-class houses of the " country pourpré" place of Guittai and street of Saulnerie. These two buildings are them also out of red schist.
