It is the king Robert II (972-1031) which made build the castle-extremely in 996 on the hillock of Montfort.
Montfort-l' Amaury was the stronghold of the family of Montfort since the beginning of the 11th century with Guillaume de Hainaut. It is his/her son, Amaury I {{er}} (1028-1053), which made build the ramparts which one can still see vestiges. The Seigneurie of Montfort-l' Amaury is set up in county with the profit of the son of Simon IV (1165-1218). During the War One hundred Year old (1337-1453), the strong Château will be destroyed by the English. The county of Montfort was related to the Duché of Brittany following the marriage of Yolande de Montfort with Arthur II of Brittany in 1364. It will return to the crown of France in 1547 during the final meeting of the Duché of Brittany to France by the accession to the throne of France of its last duke Henri II after Anne of Brittany (1477-1514) married successively the kings of France Charles VIII and Louis XII and that his/her daughter Claude of France (1499-1524) married François I {{er}}.
