The Montferrat (in Italian Monferrato , in Piedmontese Monfrà ) is a geographical area of the Piedmont, in the North-West of the Italy. It primarily lies between the current provinces of Asti and Alexandria.
Geography
Montferrat is an area mainly made up of hills, in the south of the Po and the north of the the ligure Apennines .
Economy
Montferrat is one of most famous Italian wine-producing areas the, especially with regard to the red wines and the sparkling wines. Among wines DOP ( Denominazione di Origine Protetta , denomination of protected origin) and the DOCG ( Denominazione di Origine Controllata E Garantita , Denomination of Controlled origin and Guarantee) most famous, one finds:-

History
County in the beginning, then Marquisat in 967 and finally Duchy in 1574, Montferrat lived, during the centuries, the following phases:- the reign of the Alérame, descendants of Alérame, the first marquis,
- the reign of the Paleologist starting from 1305 per male deficiency of descendant of the preceding family,
- Spanish occupation of 1533 with 1536 because of the same deficiency,
- the reign of the Gonzague, already dukes of Mantoue, as from 1536,
- sudden starts of the War of succession of Mantoue in 1631, this time still because of a problem of stopped descent, the duchy losing part of its territory to the profit of the House of Savoy,
- the reign of Gonzague-Nevers until in 1708, date on which a new rupture of male succession will attract the covetousness of Savoy which will annex entirely and definitively Montferrat.
