Montfermeil

Montfermeil is a common French, located in the department of the Seine-Saint-Denis (in the past Seine-et-Oise) and the area Île-de-France.

Its inhabitants is called Montfermeillois (be).

Geography

The city extends on 545 hectares and is located at 17 km in the east of Paris, on the southern side of the plate carrying the Forêt of Bondy.

The city gathers various heteroclite districts:

  • the center town, which shelters the Site of the pond of the seven islands 1897, destroyed in 1966 and which left room to a shopping mall;
  • the Thickets , close to the forest of Bondy and with the limit of Clichy-sous-Bois;
  • Coudreaux , with the limit of Chelles and Coubron;
  • Franceville in extreme cases of Gagny and Chelles.

Climate

Montfermeil as all the Île-de-France is subjected to a degraded oceanic Climat. The localization of the commune within the very dense urbanization of the Paris and its suburbs causes a very light rise in the temperature of one or two degrees according to the climatic conditions compared to the rural areas of Ile-de-France, in particular in calm weather and anticyclonic. This variation is particularly notable at daybreak, and tends to be accentuated with the passing of years. The annual average temperature is of 11°C, the month more the cold is January with +4,7°C; the hottest months are July and August with +20°C (average day laborer). The median number of days when the temperature exceeds 25°C is of 43, including 9 beyond 30°C. With the Le Bourget, since 1955, the annual intermediate duration of Ensoleillement is 1719 hours.

History

Etymology: Monten Firmaculum (closed mount, Strengthened mount).

The place is inhabited since the period of the Neolithic (cut flints, axes, scrapers, arrows)

Montéfirmo quoted in 1122, montfermolio in 1124, quoted in the general Cartulaire of Paris.

Montfermeil was occupied by the English (the “Anglois” as old French of the time). Jeanne d' Arc passed in the borough on September 13rd 1429.

Henri IV created the fair of the Saint Michel there. With the 17th century, construction of the castle for Michel de Chamillart, minister of Louis XIV.

In 1735, the grounds of Montfermeil are sold in Hocquart, adviser at the Parliament. For the son of this last, Montfermeil is set up in marquisat. The field is sold to lotisseurs in 1891, is repurchased by the city in 1928 and is destroyed a few months later.

Digging of a pond in 1782, to drain waste lands, at the place known as “Of the Seven islands”, lake which is nowadays drained and or is a shopping mall.

The church was partially demolished under the French revolution.

Montfermeil was clarified by the novel of Victor Hugo the Poor wretches . On one of the ways being inserted in wood, Jean Valjean meets Cosette, being gone from there to seek water with the source of the bush. A fountain was built besides on this site.

The commune is occupied by the Prussian troops, in 1870. Demolition of the castle of the 17th century in 1928.

In the years 1950 - 1960, a policy of great urban construction at sight the day and with caused the construction of a great whole of cities H.L.M..

In 2004, the city obtains an Municipal police.

The municipal council

The Municipal council is composed of nine associated mayors, of seven deputy city council men, twelve city council man of the majority (UMP), eight of the opposition, proportionally with the number of inhabitants.

At the 19th century, Montfermeil exploited two small gypsum quarries. One finds a pretense of site on the Way of the Career.

Transport

The coach station and railway nearest is that of Chelles: the line of the RER E of the Raincy - Villemomble - Montfermeil, towards the stations Magenta (Station of North) and Haussmann-Saint-Lazare; but also by the Transilien Paris-Is, connects Meaux.

The network the RATP also serves the commune with seven lines, also networks TRA (613).

These weapons are resulting from those of Hocquart, known since the 16th century. This family was the first marquis of the city at the 18th century, framed vines, agricultural main activity of the village until the 19th century.

  • Jean-Baptiste Clément which wrote the Time of the cherries resided at Montfermeil of May 1875 in November 1876.

Some important characters passed by Montfermeil:

  • Jeanne d' Arc. Its name is quoted many times in manuscripts of Seigneurerie de Montfermeil, under the name of Jeanne of Bourges .

Religious heritage

the Church Saint-Pierre Saint-Paul was built at the 13th century and.

July 29th 1799, it was sold to the Senior, who sold all his materials.

The inhabitants found their church only in 1802.

Today still, one can discover there a Martyrdom of Rude.

Tourist monuments and places

The city gathered several mills: the water mill of Saulx (towards 1200 18th century), the mill of the Pit (15th century), the mill of In Top, the mill of the Heathers, the windmill of Coubron, the mill of the Tower and the mill of Wafer, the Square mill (19th century), the mill of Sempin. There remains today only that called Moulin of Montfermeil. The Small Castle (or house of Bourlon: name of the first owners) was built towards 1635. In 1869, it was the terminus of the Larmanjat monorail. Of 1935 with 1962, it sheltered the Saint-Paul institution. The castle of the Cedars was built at the 17th century by Néret, Trésorier of France. At the 19th century, it was the property of Madam de Fleurieu who arranged it. It was bought by the city in 1994.
  • Inaugurated the September 8th 2007, the Arboretum of Montfermeil presents, on 11 hectares, a collection of trees and shrubs coming from the whole world. The 97 remarkable trees are presented on 17 benches called “Cairn S” and classified according to the set of themes of the “gallery of the evolution”.
  • Castle of House-Red, locality established in 1740, the castle passes between various hands, until the field is parcelled out and the castle destroyed in 1956.
  • the large terminal, marks the limit of two territories, Clichy and Montfermeil. It measures 70 cm height, 35 cm basic. It was destroyed during the road works in 1999.
  • House “elms”: located inside the departmental old people's home.
  • House of Funck-Brentano: built during the First Empire. She was inhabited by Frantz Funck-Brentano, historian and member of the Institute.
  • the laundrette and the Lassaut fountain: created because of the lack of water at the 19th century, and covered in 1859.
  • the Residence: dating from the time of the Restoration, she was inhabited by Charles Adolphe Wurtz.
  • the House of the Mulberry tree: it was built per Million, lawyer of Paris in 1794, and principal writer of the Complaints of the city.
  • the guinguette “With the bold cock”, on the site of the pond of the seven-Islands.

Teaching

The city counts: 1168 pupils for 46 classes in nursery school and: 1802 pupils for 75 classes in elementary school.

The town of Montfermeil concerns the academy of Creteil. The schools are managed by the General inspection of the departmental inspection of State education, Bargue boulevard.
