Montepulciano (type of vine)

The montepulciano is a Italian Cépage of black grapes.

Origin and geographical distribution

The type of vine is of unknown origin but it is diffused for a long time in central Italy.

It is classified auxiliary type of vine in DOC. Biferno, Castel del Monte, Castelli Romani, Cerveteri, Colli della Sabina, Colli Etruschi Viterbesi, Controguerra, Cori, Esino, Lago di Corbara, Leverano, Vini del Molise, Montepulciano d' Abruzzo, Pentro di Isernia, Rosso Conero, Rosso Orvietano, Rosso Piceno, San Severo, Tarquinia and Velletri. It is classified recommended in 35 provinces and authorized in 10 other provinces. It is mainly widespread in Toscane, in the Marches, the Pouilles, the the Abruzzi and in Sardinia. In 1998, it covered 31.000 ha.

This type of vine was often regarded as a synonym of the Sangiovese.

Characters ampelographic

  • End of the young cottony branch, green blanchâtre.
  • Young aranéeuses, yellowish sheets with duveteux lower part.
  • adult Sheets, with 5 lobes deep with higher sines in closed quadrant, a petiolar sine in more or less closed quadrant, teeth angular, narrow, in two series, a woolly, green limb grisâtre.

Technological potential

The bunches and the bays are of intermediate size. The bunch is conical, winged and tight. The type of vine is of average strength. It is often led out of goblet or Pergola. He asks hot climates. Its production is average but constant. It is very sensitive to the Oïdium and the Mildiou and a little less with the gray Pourriture.

The montepulciano was also used as type of vine of table.
