Origin and distribution

It belongs to the branch Pie red of the mountains. Its ancestors arrived in the area of Montbeliard at the 18th century. They accompanied their owners, of Mennonites, originating in the Bernese oberland in Swiss. Fleeing religious persecutions, they brought a cousin of the Swiss simmental. It was crossed with local races, giving the cow " Comtoise" and the cow " Tourache". Previously known under the name of race " Franco-Suisse" , the Montbéliarde appeared the first time at the fair of Couthenans in 1872, but was recognized as a race in 1889 thanks to the part played by Georges Cuvier, the veterinary surgeon Boullard and Jules Viette (appointed Montbeliard and Minister for agriculture at that time). In spite of repeated requests, the stockbreeders always refused to amalgamate their race with the Simmental Frenchwoman.
Le French livestock of race montbéliarde rises with approximately 700.000 cows. It is very present in its cradle of origin and was spread in many areas of the East and South-east, like in the Massif Central. It is exported in many countries of Europe and in North Africa.

Morphology

It wears a red black and white dress to the well delimited spots, the white head (as well as the belly, the members and the tail), and to clear mucous membranes. The horns are short, while growing.
C' is a Vache of big size. (1,45 m of height to the garrot and 700 kg for the females)

Aptitudes

It is a mixed classified race with dairy tendency. It gives 7600 kg by lactation of a milk rich in dry matter. It is at the base of the manufacture of numerous Fromage S AOC: county, Reblochon, morbier, mount of Gold, abundance, Blue of Gex, Blue of Vercors, Sassenage and cantal… It is the principal race used by the French cheese-making AOC.
C' is a race which also has a good conformation for the butchery and whose meat is considered tasty and not very fatty. The bull calves grow quickly and are required. They are also crossed with races bouchères, giving heavy and tasty young people to the descent of mountain pasture.
Ces cows is appreciated for their qualities of breeding: fertility, longevity, capacity to develop coarse fodder and resistance to the diseases (particularly with the mammites). Cows of mountain, they support well the integral outdoor in mountain pasture and are good walkers. Their let us onglons hard allow them to support stalling on surface concreted in intensive breeding. It is thus a universal race.
