Montataire

Montataire is a common French, located in the department of the Oise and the area Picardy. Its inhabitants name the Montatairiens .

Geography

Montataire is located at 50km in the north of Paris, in the south of the Département of Oise.

It is easily accessible by the road: highway A1 Paris-Lille and by RN 16.

In the public transport, the city is served by the rail: line the SNCF Paris-North correspondence with Creil then line Creil-Beauvais (Station of Montataire: 1st station while coming from Creil) or drunk N°3 line starting from the station of the SNCF of Creil.

Montataire is located close to the Confluent of the river the Thérain and the Oise.

The low city is along the valley of Thérain on each side of two banks. The high city is on a plate urbanized as from the years 1960 but where for several centuries the castle, the church and the cemetery have been located.

Economic activity

Montataire is an industrial commune with four principal companies:
  • Akzo Nobel, undertaken producing lacquers and paintings

  • Arcelor, undertaken producing rolled sheet steels
  • international Goss, company producing of the Rotary S of printing works
  • Still, company producing of the machines and lifting trucks

History

Origins of the name

The geographical location of Montataire, with a plate surmounting the valley, with the junction of Oise and Thérain, made of this site a strategic place. This is why it was always occupied and that it was then strongly industrialized.

It is crossed by the river the Thérain which is thrown in Oise with Creil and which gave him its name. Indeed, Montataire is a derivative of Latin “ Mons AD theram ” which means, “the mountain close to Thérain”.

Origins

Montataire was inhabited at least since the Mesolithic (period average of the Stone Age between the paleolithic one: paleolithic age and Neolithic era: neolithic age).

Gallic time, torque of gold was discovered in Montataire. It appears today in the cabinet of the medals of the National library. This jewel pertaining to a Gallic dignitary was updated by workmen who worked with the construction of the railway inaugurated by the Baron of Condé in 1846.

It appears that Jules César remained with its troops on the territory of Montataire.

Excavations also made it possible to discover a cemetery mérovingien gathering 292 burials of. Sarcophagi are always visible with the top of the fountain of the jubilee.

11th century

Construction of the castle and the church

At the 11th century, Hugues de Clermont makes build the castle and the church which will be altered on several occasions. At the 12th century, the castle is strengthened and an enclosing wall is built around the city to protect itself from the attacks. As from the 15th century Madaillan acquire the castle, rebuild it, build the stables then embellish it. In 1846, the Baron of Condé buys it, restores it and the history writes some.

About 1095, Pierre the Hermit, would have remained in Montataire, in a house Troglodyte, little before its departure for the First crusade, in which took part Renaud de Montataire, who made strengthen the castle and build the church.

14th century: the revolts country-woman of the Jacques

In May 1358 takes place the Jacquerie, revolt country which will last one month. She is carried out by Guillaume Calle which establishes its general headquarter with Montataire. This rising against the nobility was to gain nearly 15 current departments and will show the death of 20000 peasants.

After the Revolution, the enclosing walls of the city are destroyed.

If, in Montataire, one saw culture, breeding and trade, like everywhere in France, it then the 20th century are those of industrialization. One can quote factories of buttons in particular, shoes, socks, glasses, corsets, of cider, a paper mill…

Industrialization

In 1792 is created the factory, which, repurchased by the Mertian brothers, will become the factory of the forging mills then successively Usinor, Sollac then Arcelor, iron and steel plant.

Many industries are established in Montataire, in particular: the CIMA-WALLUT which produced agricultural machinery, Brissonneau and Lotz become Chausson thereafter where motor vehicles and engines were manufactured, the Still-Saxby factory where lifting trucks are manufactured, the Voirin establishments become Harris-Marinoni, then Heidelberg and finally Goss, specialized in the manufacture of rotary printing-presses…

The development of these companies and the constant need for labor involved an important increase in population, from where the construction of new districts in the city.

They were first of all the City Mertian and Louis Blanc about 1880, then the cities Jules Uhry, Jules Guesde, Jean Biondi and finally the district of the Trip hammers in the years 1960.

The 20th century was also that of the conflicts

At the time of the Second world war, the German troops occupy the city, the factories, the castle, and the Jeunesses hitlériennes the school Joliot-Curie. The inhabitants of Montataire illustrated themselves, many, in Resistance to the State Nazi. Nice Maurice, “colonel Théo” directs the Valmy detachment which gathers resistant towns of Montataire, Nogent, Creil and his surroundings. Many was off-set because of their membership of resistance networks, for sabotage, but also for political reasons.

During the War of Algeria, the inhabitants and the municipal council express, since 1961, their opposition to the conflict, claim negotiations for self-determination and the cease-fire which will be effective on March 12th, 1962.

The March 20th 1965 is made up the DUAC: Urbain district of the agglomeration creilloise, gathering Montataire, Creil, Nogent-sur-Oise and Villers-Saint-Paul.

Pursuant to the law Chevènement n° 99-586 of July 12th, 1999 creating the communities of agglomerations, the DUAC is transformed into CAC: the Community of communes of the agglomeration Creilloise on December 17th, 2001.
