Montainville is a small rural district which is in the center of Yvelines, with 19 kilometers in the south-east of Mantes-the-Pretty and with 27 kilometers in the west of Versailles, in the prolongation of the Plaine of Versailles.

The communes bordering are Mareil-on-Mauldre in the east, Beynes in the south, Marcq in south-west, Andelu in the west and Maule in the North-West.

The territory of the commune is relatively not very wide (479 hectares against 872 on average for the communes of Yvelines) and extends in extreme cases is plate of the Mantois and on the western slope of the valley of the Mauldre. The unevenness is relatively important between the plate, which are between 120 and 130 meters of altitude, and the bottom of the valley, with approximately 40 meters. The village is on the edge of the plate, around the coast 100 meters, which corresponds to a line of sources. The site of the village forms a headland limited by two small valleys named according to the name of sources, the small valley of the Bill hook in north, that of the Elm in the south, which forms the southern limit of the commune.

A project of road link North-South express train between the Highway of Normandy in north and the Trunk road 12 in the south, known under the name of new Way of the valley of Mauldre (VNVM), could cross, in the unspecified term, the communal territory in its part is (on the plate). The municipality of Montainville belongs to the opponents to this project, which is the subject in addition of a debate between the general advice of Yvelines and the district council of Ile-de-France.
