Montagu island

The island Montagu largest of the Sandwich islands of the South, is located in the Mer of Weddell close to the coasts of the the Antarctic.

This uninhabited island measures 12 kilometers out of 10, with permanently 90% of its covered surface of ice. The volcano Mont Belinda is a notable geographical characteristic, culminating with 1370 meters with the top of the sea.

The island was for the first time announced by James Cook in 1775, and named according to John Montagu, 4th count de Sandwich and first Lord of the British Admiralty at the time of its discovery.

In November 2005, of the images sattelites show that an eruption of the Mont Belinda has creates a lava flow of 90 meters towards the north of the island. This event increased the surface of the island of 0.2 km ², and provides the first scientific observations of an volcanic eruption on the ice.
