Monocycle trial

The objective of the trial is to find a place improbable for the practice of the monocycle and to surmount it. In trial, one thus seeks always higher, further, more impressive, more dangerous. It can be practiced in natural site (on tree trunks, rocks…), downtown (on staircases, benches, barriers, low walls…) or in artificial site (on pallets, tires…)

Techniques:

Side-hop: in monocycle, there exist two techniques to jump upwards: the “side-hop” and the “rolling hop”. The rolling hop is a jump of face with dash, it is more used in street because it gives a rather fluid style. In trial, one uses the side-hop because the style does not have any importance and it makes it possible to go up higher (for the majority of people). It is a side jump without dash. Since it does not require a dash, the side-hop also makes it possible to jump to the mileu of a zone of trial.

To carry out a side-hop, it is necessary to leave its saddle and to be placed at a distance from the obstacle a little higher than its height. It is necessary to make a first jump to compress the tire, which makes it possible to rebound, while pushing on its legs. This rebound must be done at a distance a little higher than half the height of the obstacle. Then, it is necessary to draw on the saddle to make go up the mono one and make go up the knees in front of oneself. Some prefer to use even more the rebound of the tire and make several jumps of dash. This technique can be used saddle as saddle inside in front. It in particular makes it possible to assemble very high saddle below. It is used by Joe Hodges. Note: to begin, one jumps saddle inside. The most jump carried out in side-hop (on line, to see low) is 1m09 by Ryan Atkins (seen in “good movie has leaves 2”). A video tutorial for the side-hop here, by Samiaul

Pedal grab: to gain height, it is possible to land on the pedal rather than on the tire, that is called a “pedal grab”. Once the pedal posed, it is necessary to remain in balance and for this reason to move the center of gravity to the top of the pedal. For that, there are the choice between leaning the mono one (in the case of a jump saddle below) or shifting his body a little by leaving the mono right good (in the case of a jump saddle in front). It is then necessary to go up on the obstacle, for that, two techniques are used: to jump while being pressed on the pedal posed on the obstacle or to make balance the wheel of before behind and use the inertia of mono to go up on the obstacle.

Crank grab: it is easier to pose the pedal and the crank on the obstacle, that is called a crank grab. This technique is only one intermediary at the time of the training of the pedal grab because it makes it possible to go up less higher (to pose the crank, this one must be horizontal).

On line: in opposition to the pedal grab, to go up “on line” means that one lands on the wheel.

Tico-tico: it is a pedal grab immediately followed increase on the obstacle. The tico-tico is used in street for its fluidity. It also makes it possible to circumvent the problem of the balance once posed on the obstacle, in particular on small surfaces. Lastly, the tico-tico makes it possible to connect on a double pedal grab because if one stops on the first, it is very difficult to jump rather high. A video tutorial for the tico-tico here, by Adrien Mainand

Drop: the drop is a jump downwards. It can be made saddle or saddle inside in front. Dropper saddle in front of makes it possible to better deaden (by folding the legs) but makes the landing less stable and more delicate.

Transfer: the transfer is a long jump above the vacuum, it can be carried out saddle in front of or saddle inside.

Rails: to roll on less and less broad surfaces (rails of barrier, railroad or simply low wall to begin), also forms part of the trial. Hardest being to roll on bars of round section.

Material:

The monos of trials must be solid and lightest possible. The diameter of the wheel is of 19" , sometimes 20". They have a large tire (generally 2,5") who allows to deaden or rebound, as well as a broad rim which makes it possible to control this tire well. The pedals are out of metal (steel, aluminum or magnesium) and are equipped with barbs, which allows good hangs in pedal grab. The saddle is fine, which facilitates the catch in hand at the time of the jumps saddle in front of and is equipped with a handle for the jumps saddle below. The majority of the parts are reinforced to allow the most extreme practices.

In France, the Monocycle of trial more used is the DEVIL from KOXX ONE. There exists in several versions (Gold, Blueberry, White Widow. ). He is recognized for his quality ratio/price. Principal marks of monos of trial:

Course of a competition of trial

The goal of the trial is to pass from the obstacles without touching neither the ground nor the obstacles with the body. These obstacles are called zones. A competition proceeds on a circuit made up from 15 to 40 zones. The goal is to pass the greatest possible number of zones in a given time. The duration must be higher than 2:00.
