Resulting from the Cirque the monocycle (probably derived from the large Bi ) is a Véhicule consisted of a Roue, a saddle and a pedals. Contrary to the bicycle, the majority of the monocycles do not have a chain, and the Manivelle S are directly fixed on the wheel axle, without reduction. The saddle is longer and narrower with before with the back, in order to allow a better maintenance. Today it democratized and counts new followers much each day.
Models
There exist various types of monocyles:
- “simple” monocycles: the user sat on a saddle, and the pedals are fixed on the wheel axle
- the monocycles trial and street: the tire of the monocycle is broader than that of mono simple, allowing the practice of Street and Trial. The principal difference with a standard monocycle is solidity (rim, axis, and reinforced cranks) a handle can be fixed at the end of the saddle to facilitate the jumps
- the “cross-country” monocycles or “MTT”: They are solid like the monos of trial or street but have a large wheel (between 24" and 29") to go more quickly. They are, so heavier.
- let us girafons them: the saddle is raised, and it wheel is pulled by a chain connected to pedals (possibility of reduction of the effort)
- the giraffes with wheels: the saddle is raised, and it wheel is pulled by one or more other (S) wheel (S) which are touched, piled up vertically. an even number of wheels implies that it is necessary to pedal in the direction opposed to the rotation of the wheel (record (perhaps exceeded): 13 wheels)
- the kangaroo: monocycle “simple” whose pedals are not opposite: it is easy to modify its mono by reversing one of the cranks so that the two pedals are found on the same level (in bottom, or top)… But less easy to use! There are the special ones with a wheel with eccentric axis.
- the “ultimate wheel”: monocycle without saddle where the pedals are fixed without crank at very the wheel.
- the “wheel impossible”, so called “bc wheel” or “bc”, is an alternative of the impossible wheel. It is made up of a wheel and two supports suspended on the axis which are on the same level.
- the monocycle at speed. The challenge which the construction of a monocycle at speed represented (without chain and free wheel) was recently taken up by the Swiss company Schlumph.
Many other models were created, technical alternatives (mono in reclining position for example) or esthetics (many models with the more delirious looks ones than the others). Certain modifications were made for a precise use (brakes and shock absorbers for the descents of mountains, snow tires…) but there is few true technical innovations.
Sizes of wheel
There exist several diameters of wheel:
- 12 to 18 inches (30,5 to 46 cm): used by the children.
- 19 inches (48 cm): used for the trial and the street.
- 20 inches (51 cm): the model more running. Used for the beginners and freestyle (artistic).
- 24 inches (61 cm): improve the capacities speed. Size of reference for cross-country (compromised speed/handiness).
- 26 inches (66 cm): for speed on the long distances.
- 28/29 inches 700c: for the excursion on long distance.
- 36 inches (92 cm): more difficult to handle, but favorable to the long distances and the speed.
The face width of wheels can go up to 4 inches
To go up on the monocycle
There exist many manners of going up on a monocycle. Simplest and most current consists in placing the saddle of mono between its legs, the wheel forwards, then to press a pedal so that the machine moves back, raising the user which is found sitted, a foot on a pedal. It is then necessary to place its other foot on the other pedal and to start to pedal immediately, under penalty of not holding in balance. The success of the rise depends on the speed and the precision on the action, like (especially) of the practice of the user.
The other school consists in placing the saddle of the monocycle between its legs by holding the handle (or the saddle according to the case) using the hand on the same side as its foot of call, the wheel posed on the ground to about thirty centimetre of the user, and to place his foot of call on the pedal this one being low possible. Then it is necessary to make use of foot of call in order to rise on the monocycle by projecting its body. It is then necessary to quickly place the other foot on the other pedal (which will be located in top) and to benefit from the movement of the body and the arrival from the second foot on the pedal to start to advance. It is preferable in the first times to start to evolve/move in " danseuse".
Another solution consists placed its monocycle in front of oneself the two pedals at the horyzontale, to hold the quite right saddle, it is thus enough to jump above (Attention has your testicles and with the fall behind).
Figures
There exist many other figures, more technical, mild nutters, breakage-neck the ones that others…
Monocycle and company
All the types of juggling were carried out on monocycle, as of many instuments of music were used. Once the controlled basic technique, the followers of mono are always with the research of the spectacular one. The origin of the monocycle there is found: The circus.
Sports
Many sports are practiced on monocycle:
- cross-country
- the tennis shoe
- hockey
- the high jump
- the trial
- the street
- the flat
- the speed race
- the race of endurance
