Integrated at the origin with Saint-Rémy-on-Durolle, Monnerie was organized in a small central borough and several spaced villages more or less important.

The industrial activity and the presence of the Trunk road 89 and the Railroad allowed a fast development, including the villages and forming a small town much more important cuts some than St-Rémy.
It is the most important commune of the Community of communes of the Thiernoise Mountain.
The exchanger Thiers-Is Autoroute A72 (Clermont-Ferrand - Saint-Etienne) there is established since 1983. An industrial park was created jointly and includes/understands companies of work of metals (cutting, stamping…).
