History
The name only comes from “Monge”, which attests the presence of Moine S withdrawn with the Moyen-âge in these Montagne S. At the beginning of the 20th century, exist huts of Berger S. the Ski begins timidly towards 1920.Very first the Ski lift of Mongie was the ski-lift of the “Sugar loaf”. It is the result of a long project, initiated before the war by Pierre Lamy of the Vault and the members of the Circle of the sports of Bigorre. This ski-lift was built in 1945, with the support of Bernard of the Vault (his Pierre brother having been killed in 1944) and of Maurice Lacroutz. To build and exploit this increase, a company, the SELAM (Company of equipment of Mongie), was created and obtained a 18 years lease. The increase comprised metal pylons with four feet and profited from the patent Pomagalski of disengageable grip, just developped at the point.
The other significant event for the development of the station was the decision to serve the observatory of the peak of the South, which existed since 19th, of a Téléphérique in two sections, from which the first, since Mongie until the Taoulet would be accessible to the skiers. It is primarily the influence of Pierre Lamy of the Vault, untiring promoter of Mongie, which carried the decision. The building site lasted of 1945 with 1953 and made it possible to equip the station with a Electrical communication and a Network water supply.
In 1951 Albert Bidabé makes install “the Career” with the site where the construction materials were extracted. In 1953 Jean-Louis Dabat is on the initiative of the Bolt-Blanque and in 1955, the SELAM makes build the “Small Fir trees”. As from this time the installation and the equipment of the station were constant. The junction with Barèges by the Col of Tourmalet is carried out in 1973.
