Money surfer

The Surfer of Money ( Silver Surfer ) is a Super-héros of Cartoon, created by Stan Lee and drawn by Jack Kirby, whose first adventure was published in March 1966 in the n° 48 of the Comic Fantastic Four .

History of the publications

The character appears for the first time in 1966, under the pencil of Jack Kirby, in an episode of the Fantastic Four in which they are confronted with a named entity Galactus, the demigod eater of worlds. Estimating that such a powerful character must have a Héraut, Jack Kirby creates of its characteristic made a silver plated surfer who precedes it.

The idea allured Stan Lee so much so that in May 1968 the character appears in a clean booklet which is devoted to him. The drawing is entrusted to John Buscema which, having a broad autonomy, carries out seventeen episodes (the last is of Jack Kirby) in which it will develop in-depth epic dimension and especially tragedy (with the direction shakespearien) of the character. The purity of the feature of Buscema highly inspired will propel the Money Surfer to the row of legend. This last will make new appearances thereafter, in particular under the feather of other draftsmen or scenario writers, but without finding the breath of the initial episodes.

Thus, in July 1987, a new series is entrusted to Steve Englehart and John Buscema (replaced right from the start by Marshall Rogers). It will last 146 episodes and will see authors as prestigious as Jim Starlin, Ron Marz, George Pérez or Jean-Marc De Matteis to work there. Then, another series is created with the beginning of the year 2000, projecting the Surfer in universes close to the science fiction. Meanwhile, it will have been the subject of several “graphic novels” carried out by Jack Kirby, John Byrne (June 1982), John Buscema (1988) and Keith Pollard (1990), all written by Stan Lee. Jim Starlin also wrote several independent accounts on the character.

In France, the series was published for the first time in February 1969 in the n° 1 of the review Fantask , then as from the year 1970 in Strange and of 1978 in Nova . It is in this periodical that Marcel Navarro (which signs Malcolm Naughton) and the draftsman Jean-Yves Mitton (which signs John Milton) carry out two new episodes of the Surfer which are, historically, the first comics officially produced by a French team. One will find the character in several albums, in particular the Four Fantastic , with covers of Jean Frisano. In December 1988, the draftsman Moebius joined Stan Lee to carry out an episode doubles entitled Parabole (Parable) which was published in the review (To be followed) , then in album at Casterman (rééd. Sun Productions).

From 1989, the character is the subject again of a regular monthly series, scenarized initially by Steve Englehart, then by Jim Starlin.

History

The day when Galactus unloads on Zenn it, He discovers a planet without defense because its inhabitants lost any combative spirit. All except one: Norrin Radd, which goes courageously to its meeting but which is of course quickly tiny room to its mercy. This one makes him a proposal then: to become its herald and to traverse the universe in its place in exchange of what Galactus will save Zenn it.

For Galactus, to make seek planets to be devoured by an ambassador is much more energy saver to seek them itself. Galactus invests Norrin-Radd of the cosmic capacity, recovers its skin of a indestructible silver plated substance, and a indestructible vehicle Supraluminique answering its thought and the appearance of a simple board offers to him. This vehicle is worth in Norinn Radd the nickname of Money Surfer. It gives up its been engaged Shalla-Ball thus, which will be for him thereafter a reason of more than deplore its fate and to suffer from the pangs from the exile.

The continuation differs according to the adaptations from the history. In the cartoon the Four Fantastic , the Guard affirms that Galactus attacked only uninhabited planets before finding the Earth (but the galactic police force Nova Corps regards it as suspect of genocide complicity). In the cartoon the Surfer of Money , all advanced civilizations know that if they see the Money Surfer, it is useless to fight, and it is necessary to evacuate planet before the arrival of Galactus. Always in the cartoon, Galactus discovers only the Earth whereas the Surfer escaped a plot from Titan Thanos. When it understands that the land ones are too primitive to evacuate their planet, the Surfer attacks Galactus to save the Earth. The servant is easily overcome by the Master, but this last, impressed by the courage of the Surfer, agrees to save the Earth and returns its freedom to the Surfer.

In the cartoon, it is the Surfer who discovers the Earth, and sends the signal to Galactus. Being located in-outside any morals, with the image of its Master, he then does not see the gravity of the act which he makes by delivering a planet inhabited to Galactus. But after its meeting with Alicia Masters, it is convinced that the Earth deserves to be saved. But its opposition against its Master has only little effect, and in fact the the Four Fantastic, helped of the Guard push back Galactus. This one agrees to leave the Earth, but deprives the Surfer of part of his capacities and only establishes around the Earth an invisible and insuperable barrier by him so that he discovers the misdeeds of the humanity for which he gave his freedom. After grinds adventures against Méphisto the lord of the evil and Galactus seeking to reconquer its herald, Fatalis, Loki god of the defect, Badoons, or the high lord and the Foreigner and of course humanity seeking many times to exploit it or destroy it. He will finally manage to find freedom at the beginning of the new series of comics in 1989, when Galactus forgives it and allows him to cross its barrier. The Surfer takes again his adventures in cosmos until today.

A pathetic hero

Left Christ silver plated exiled on the Earth by the will of Galactus, the Money Surfer is a super a little particular hero since it is deprived of secret identity and even of costume. Its role consists in making rounds on its surfing around planet while deploring its fate exiled and the ingratitude human which see in him only one threat. It is a perfect recluse, restive with least integration.

Equip with its attributes and invested of its cosmic capacity, it was one of the super most powerful heroes of its time. It was able to box a direct blow of the hammer of Thor and to fight with Hulk has hand naked. What is nothing. It was only more pathetic, all this overpower seeming all the more useless helping it to solve its own problems.

Hero equipped with a great moral purity, the Money Surfer has enemies out of the commun run. One among them, Méphisto, does not seek besides to destroy it but covets its immortal heart quite simply. In a famous episode, it sends to face it the heart of the Dutch stealing that it withdrew limbs and equipped with powerful weapons. Not being able to overcome it, the Money Surfer releases it from the curse which strikes it by pouring a tear its fate. Like Superman , the Money Surfer pained to be adversaries with his measurement.

It is not the first hero for whom the accession with the super power appears a curse ( Spider-Man for example). However, at his place the phenomenon reaches such a paroxysm that it confines with pathetic larmoyant and constitutes a kind of apotheosis. Such a hero could have only rare descendants. One of most astonishing, is without doubts the Spawn of Todd McFarlane, character tortured whose ugliness suggests a very interior beauty, and who suffers finally from the same metaphysical anguishes and cosmic that the Money Surfer.
