Moneo

In France, Moneo (sometimes written Mon€o ) is the mark of an electronic system of Porte-monnaie used:

  • on Bank card or traditional credit card
  • on Moneo chart dedicated to this use.
Its characteristics are the speed (flow then credit in a few seconds, without use of secret code) and the Anonymat as for the Monnaie matérielle.
Recharging is carried out:
  • on special terminals (in the banks,…)
  • on the TPE (payment terminal electronic) of the tradesmen.
The payment is carried out on the TPE of the tradesmen or in the Vending machines.

The amounts concerned with the transactions are about small the Monnaie (distributer, automat, coffee, bakery, newspaper, parking meter, etc).

Moneo is managed by the Consortium BMS Billetique Monétique Service which gathers ten Banque S Frenchwomen (BNP Paribas, Banques Populaires, Savings banks, HSBC, CIC, Crédit Agricole, Crédit Lyonnais, Crédit Mutuel, the Postal bank, General society) but also the SNCF, the RATP and France Telecom.

Moneo remains from now on the only system of electronic porte-monnaie on the French territory:

  • the system Modeus (chart without contact) was absorbed in 2000 by the Moneo system.
  • the Mondex rival system (Crédit Mutuel of the Center Is) is in the course of abandonment.

The popularity of Moneo rests on a dense grid of affiliated tradesmen, but some consider the commissions perceived by transaction and the costs of hiring of the terminals still too high. The economies of scale will not be carried out before ten years.

The deployment of Moneo began with Tours at the end of 1999. The process was started again at the end of 2005, in particular with the adoption of these means of payment for the parking meters (parking), then by the insertion of Moneo devices in the student cards of certain universities.
