Monem

In Phonology, field of the Linguistic , a monem is the smallest linguistic unit carrying direction. One prefers today the term Morphème to him, with which it is synonymous in the developments with André Martinet (1908-1999).

It is thus about an abstract entity developed by the French linguist Martinet, to give an account of its concept of Double articulation of the units constitutive of the language. The monems are there units of first articulation which have form and direction. Those always do not coincide with a mot. For example, in ate , one can find two distinct directions: the action to eat and the indication of a temporality. One thus distinguishes in this word two monems: eats and board . Trip hammer calls the units of second articulation, the Phonème S, which indicate the smallest units of sound which form the monems.
