Monegasque

Presentation

The Monegasque is a Dialecte Ligure (Italian, pertaining to the Romance Langues), taught in Principality of Monaco but little practiced.

It is about a vernacular language rather near to that spoken in Vintimille (Intémélien) different from the close Mentonasque. It was influenced by the Occitan (the occitan was also spoken in Monaco, especially apart from the Rock).

Example

A text in this language is with the article Hymne Monegasque .

Reading

A text as a Monegasque is read with the following characteristics:
  • the " ü" is read.
  • the " u" is read.
  • the " e" and the " œ" are read. (and not as in the word ox as in Ligurian, where one uses also the notation " ö")
  • the " ç" is read as in French: tradiçiùn comes from Latin traditio '' and not from Italian tradizione
  • " c" in front of " a" , " o" , " u" , " ü" and " ch" in front of " e" , " i" , " œ" is read.
  • " g" in front of " a" , " o" , " u" , " ü" and " gh" in front of " e" , " i" , " œ" is read.
  • " ci" in front of " a" , " o" , " u" , " ü" , " œ" and " c" in front of " e" , " i" is read.
  • " gi" in front of " a" , " o" , " u" , " ü" , " œ" and " g" in front of e" , " i" is read.
  • " sci" in front of " a" , " o" , " u" , " ü" , " œ" and " sc" in front of " e" , " i" is read.

Use

With Monaco, 17% of the population still speak the Monegasque. (They are generally the “old hand” which still speaks this language, called the munegascu ). The Monegasque was regarded as a language in process of extinction to the beginning of the year 1970, but its introduction into the schools seems to have given him a second breath.

The official language of the Principality of Monaco being the French, there are few activities aiming at diffusing the Monegasque: few publications appear as a Monegasque, and no radio program or of television uses it. Only the Committee of the Traditions Monegasques publishes each year a calendar and there exist some works: dictionaries French-Monegasque and Monegasque-French, a grammar, some collections of poems, proverbs and anecdotes.

This statute is nevertheless ambiguous, since, private speakers, the Monegasque nevertheless is taught at the school and can be presented in option to the baccalaureat.
