Mondorf-the-baths

Mondorf-the-Baths ( Munneref in Luxembourg) is a commune in the south of the Luxembourg at the French border. Mondorf is a seaside resort and the site of thermal springs used with the fine therapeutic ones.

A commune in three parts

Geography

The commune is located at the south of the commune of Remich and at the north of Mondorff in Lorraine, area of France, very close to the German border in the east. The locality is largest of the canton of Remich.

History

The war criminal Nazis were interned in Mondorf before the lawsuit of Nuremberg.

The thermal center

After the drillings carried out as from 1841 with an aim of finding rock salt, it is into 1846 that the first source with a 736 meters was discovered depth (European record in drilling during long years). It was a tepid source, rich in minerals.

It was called source Kind according to the chief deputy Karl Gotthelf Kind, known at the time for its searchs for rock salt in Thuringe and Saxony-Weimar, and later on still for the artesian well of Passy. For work with Mondorf, he invented the Trépan with freefall known under the name of Procédé Kind-Cauldron.

The Ledure notary proposed to use the mineral properties of the source at curative ends. A “company of the Baths of Mondorf” was made up and the architect Charles Eydt in charge of construction of a hydropathic establishment which started to function as from June 1847.

With the construction of several large hotels the locality developed quickly.

The recruiting of famous doctors guaranteed the surge of the customers. Let us quote inter alia Doctor Schmit of Luxembourg, Doctor Marchal de Mondelange and famous Doctor Fleury, doctor of the imperial court of France. It was especially the last which attracted towards the thermal baths of Mondorf French customers of mark.

Unfortunately, the war of 1870 put fine a rapid at this balneal rise.

Thus on April 21st, 1886, the Luxembourg State repurchased the balneal center for the sum of 100.000 francs.

Doctor Martin Klein who, at the time of the decline of the Seventies, had left his medical position of director to be established in Antwerp, was pointed out to take again the direction. He attracted many Belgian customers.

About 1913, the flow of the Kind source dropped dangerously and a second source a 464 m depth had to be drilled. One named it in the honor of sovereign Marie-Adelaide.

A fire in 1919 devastates almost all the installations. The whole was rebuilt and the 2nd inauguration took place in 1926.

The weak economy of the Thirties involved a fall of the number of the bathers. In against part, one foot-note an surge of German emigrants which fleeing the Nazi Germany, including celebrates it pianist Arthur Rubinstein among those.

After the Armistice of May 1945, the thermal center had the doubtful privilege to lodge the 59 survivors of the elite of 3rd Reich, awaiting the future Procès of Nuremberg.

The 12 avri1 1979, the House of Commons unanimously voted the bill authorizing the construction of a new thermal center.

A drilling for a new source, the source Michel Lucius was then started (depth 760 meters).
