Monastery of Tismana

Founded in the 14th century by the orthodoxe saint Nicodème the Piles, with the financial support of the reigning princes of the Basarab family:

  • Radu I (1377 - 1383) and its sons
  • daN I (1384 - 1386)
  • Mircea Ier Old the (1386 - 1418)
The monastery was placed close to the small built church of a large tree of ² stoked ². The large church was crowned on August 15th, 1377, and with the Virgin Mary like owner.

The monastery of Tismana is an architectural complex which combines the Byzantine style of the 14th century, the characteristics of the churches of Macedonia and Athos and some elements of Rumanian architecture. The large church is built directly on the rock, according to a plan triconic with bell-towers on the nave, the pronaos and the porch. During ages, there were many changes.

In 1650, prince Matei Basarab built the church of the hospital inside the monastery (the vault). This one was painted by Dimitrie Nicolaide in 1848; it has several windows of stained glass, gift of the poet George Cosbuc; the owner of this church is the saint Élie prophet.

The large church was painted in 1564 by Dobromir de Targoviste, financially supported by the large Nedelcu magistrate. Painting is carried out in the style post-Byzantine, polychrome. On the first plaster of the church, there is a monochromic fresco.

In 1732, the Ioan archimandrite, financially supported by the monastery and the titrated lady Stanca Glogoveanu, renovated the table of the saint furnace bridge and the naos. In the pronaos, the fresco of 1564 was not destroyed but a new fresco was applied in 1766. Above the windows, one painted the same scenes as those which existed before and one also painted the portraits of the new founders. New painting was carried out by the painter Dimitrie Diaconu, with the financial aid of Mrs. Stanca Glogoveanu. Starting of 1955, the table of 1766 was preserved and placed on the walls of the museum of the monastery and in the corridors of the hermitages. The first table of 1564 was also restored.

The majority of the details of the table of the church were discovered in 1955, at the time of the investigation made by specialists. The investigation was initiated by the Firmilian bishop, métropolite of Oltenie, and by the higher nun Stavrofora Ierusalima Gligor.

The porch of the church which had been demolished during the reign of prince Bibescu Voda (1842-1848), was entirely restored in 1983, according to the plans of Nicodim the Piles. During the same time, the enclosure of the monastery with all its appendices were renovated, the coordinator of the restoration being engineer Ioan Salajean, the current bishop of Harghita and Covasna.

In 1994, the porch of the church was painted by Grigore Popescu in the Byzantine style, having a correct design and a harmony discrette of let us tons chromatic. The iconographic presentation is also innédite by the appearance in first of the Roman saints daco-, saints discovered and canonized during the last years.

The monastery of Tismana had an extraordinary treasure but it was lost because of many damage which have occurred during the years. Most of the invaluable objects is at the present at the museum of Art of Romania. Among these objects de Saint Nicodim- one is Evangeliaire opens complex art, invaluable for the beauty of writing and the ornaments in miniature, and also for gilded silver setting. This Evangeliaire is the oldest Rumanian manuscript and oldest silver setting.

The museum of the monastery has also a rich person collection of the tables which belong to the fresco of the pronaos of 1766, old icons on wood, religious objects, old books and clerical dresses.

Inside the church there is a crowned money coffin, made by the visual artist Gheorghe Stoica of Bucharest, which contains three pieces of crowned vestiges: Saint Nicodim (the index of the right hand), Holy Ignatie Theofor, Saint Jean Stops of Gold, the coffin contains also the cross carried by Saint Nicodim.

The saints are introduced in medallions enamelled on the eyelid and inside the crowned coffin. Outside some scenes of the life and the miracles of Nicodim Saint are presented.

The Monastery of Tismana- centers culture, proof alive of the creative spirituality of our Orthodoxe people, is firstly a crowned place or the heart can feel the presence of God and its saints, a place or the miracle is always present.
