Monastery of Pustinja

The monastery of Pustinija , in Serb Cyrillic МанастирПустиња, is a Serb monastery orthodoxe located close to Procuta, with 20km of Valjevo, in the throats of the river Jablanica.

Into Serb, the name of the monastery means " the désert". Pustinja is today a convent occupied by nuns, the monastery was formerly inhabited by monks.

History

The monastery of Pustinja was founded at the 13th century, perhaps by the king Stefan Dragutin. A tax register Turkish tonic with 1572 announces that it is occupied only by one monk.

The current buildings date from the 17th century. The church is devoted to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary. The silent partner of work is a monk called Joakim.

The monastery was damaged at the time when the Othoman went on Vienna. Restored in 1759, it was again damaged in 1787 and 1788. It remained with the abandonment during forty years.

In 1848, one added to the building a Narthex and a bell-tower.

During the First World War, the Austrian soldiers made use of the narthex like cattle shed. At the time of their retirement, they carried with them two large bells which decorated the church.

Architecture and frescos

The church has only one nave, with an apse on the Eastern side and two choruses in North and the South. An octagonal dome is high in its center.

In 1622, the Jovan painters and Nikola decorated it frescos. As an inscription indicates it, they achieved their task in 123 days, of the March 15th to the June 25th 1622. The frescos are in good state of conservation.

One finds there a portrait of the Joakim monk offering his church to the Virgin Mary and of the representations of the apostles Pierre and Paul. The most famous fresco is that of Midsummer's Day Baptiste; because of its artistic value, it was put under the protection of UNESCO.

The Iconostase contains Icônes 19th century.
