Presentation

The monastery of Kalenić was built towards 1415 by certain Bogdan, companion of the despot Stefan Lazarević. Given up at the 17th century, the monastery was restored by the prince Miloš Obrenović in 1823.

By its architecture, the church, devoted to the Annunciation, is typical school moravienne such as it is also illustrated with Ravanica, Lazarica and Ljubostinja: radiant apse, single nave with Western barrel vault and narthex. The walls external of the church are equipped with sculptures offering with true scenes (drives out at court, fights of Samson against immortality…).

It contains frescos of Byzantine style, in the spirit of those of the monastery of the Christ of Chora (Kariye Camii) to Constantinople. They represent in particular the Bogdan founder and the despot Stefan Lazarević, accompanied by his Milica wife.
