Monastery of Jean Saint of Peña

The Monastery of Jean Saint of Peña , or San Juan of Peña, located at a few kilometers of the town of Jaca in Spain, in the Province of Huesca.

After a long rise in the savage sierra of Peña, with 1200m of altitude, the monastery appears tiny under the overhang of the rock. The site is spectacular.

Symbol of the maintenance of the Christian faith in the the Pyrenees at the time of the Moslem occupation, this monastery was selected like the Pantheon by the kings and the noble ones of Aragon-Navarre.

It was founded in the year 920 in this site very moved back by Galindo Aznárez II, count d' Aragon on spot in the past occupied by the Ermite S which had been withdrawn in this hidden corner of the the Pyrenees, following the Moslem invasion, in the neighborhoods of the year 720.

At the 11th century, the convent adopts the reform clunisienne. The generous royal donations attract here many monks, often French.

Because of its seniority and its site, the plan of the monastery resembles of nothing the traditional diagram. At the 17th century another monastery was built higher.

The Room of the Councils. Also called, wrongly, dormitory, it is of a robust architecture.

The low church or primitive church which, thereafter, acted as Crypte, is one of rare constructions Mozarabe S remaining in the area. It is made of two Nef S joined, separated by large arcs; two niches dug in the rock are used as Abside S where one detects, just as inside, of the arcs and mural decorations.

upper floor

With the upper floor, one penetrates in the court of the the Pantheon of the noble ones.

The Pantheon of noble Aragonese of XIe and 14th centuries. The monastery of San Juan of Peña was a point of reference on the Camino aragones of the Ways of Saint-Jacques-with-Compostelle.

The tradition wants that at the Moyen-âge, of many pilgrims arrived at Saint Jean of Peña to admire his most important relic, the Saint Chalice.
