Monastery of Hiéronymites

The Mosteiro back Jerónimos , is located at the west of Lisbon, in the district of Belem. This unit, composed of the church Santa Maria, is a famous chief of work of the Architecture manuéline.

History

It was built between 1496 and 1572, thanks to the sale of spices and with the brought back richnesses, following forwardings of Vasco de Gama, in the Nouveau World. In the church are the tombs of the Manuel Ier of Portugal, Vasco de Gama and the poet Luís de Camões. In the monastery the museums of the marine and archeology are installed.

Comments

It is one of the most beautiful existing religious monuments in the world and one of most visited of Lisbon. The monastery was classified with the World heritage of UNESCO in 1983.
