Monastery of Ettal

The monastery Benedictine of Ettal was rested by the emperor Louis of Bavaria in the valley of Graswang on April 28th 1330 to venerate an image of Marie whom the king had reported of Italy. Since the 17th century this image attracts the pilgrims of the whole world.

At the 18th century, under the direction of the abbot Placidus II, the monastery became an academy of Théologie famous in everyone catholic. A fire destroyed the monastery in 1774.

It was secularized in 1803. The monks were driven out and most of destroyed the monastery. Only the church and one of the wings are preserved.

In 1907 Ettal could take again its activities under the direction of the abbot Wilibald Wolfsteiner. The monastery was rebuilt according to the old plans. Ettal has a bakery, a distilling, a brewery, a kitchen garden, a joinery, a iron work, a hotel, lodgings of holidays, an important library and a bookstore. Today the monastery shelters about fifty monks and the school accommodates 140 boarders and 430 external.
