Molenbeek-Saint-Jean
Molenbeek-Saint-Jean (in Dutch Sint-Jans-Molenbeek ) is one of the 19 common bilingual of Belgium located in the Région of Brussels-Capital.
At January 1st 2007, it counted 81.427 inhabitants (Molenbeekois). Its surface is of 5,89 km ². The commune densément is densément populated: it counts more than 13.000 hab/km ², that is to say the double of the average of Brussels.
Molenbeek-Saint-Jean is bordering on the communes of Brussels-city, Anderlecht, Dilbeek, Berchem-Holy-Agathe, Koekelberg and Jette.
Etymology
Village on the brook (Dutch beek ) of the mill (Dutch molen ) (today Maalbeek), with parish dedicated to saint Jean the Baptist.
Urban context
In the low part of the commune extend from the industrial districts to the coloured gravers, always joyeusement animated by a population primarily Allochtone. In its high part, the common offer an urban landscape more residential and bordered of green areas.

Cultural places
The culture in this commune is not new It is for example with the Chaussée of Ghent that the Belgian Cinéma occurs. This center initiated by Philippe Moureaux within the framework of the Objective European Program II and organizes intercultural activities to support the meeting of the inhabitants of the district by the means of activities developing the cultural richnesses (Community festivals, creative workshops, intergénérationnelles meetings, movies club,…). The purpose of this center is to also play a part of Social cohesion. The center also integrates the collections of the communal Museum. It is dedicated to the collections which emphasize the industrial past of the commune and an association muséale. The project relates to the cultures, voluntarily granted in the plural to invite to the maximum the decompartmentalization and to invite to the dialog by the valorization of the intercultural expression. This center at summer dedicated like one of the operators for the Festival of the Music in the French Community. The building since 2004 is recognized like monument and site by the Government of Brussels-Capital.
