Mohsen Makhmalbaf
Mohsen Makhmalbaf محسنمخملباف is a scenario writer, realizer, assembler, producer, actor and director of the photography Iran IEN born the May 29th 1957 with Teheran (Iran). He is the father of the director Samira Makhmalbaf.
Biography
Born in a poor family in the south from Teheran, he worked since the eight years age, and changed trade thirteen times before being seventeen years old. Before the Iranian Revolution, it was a militant policy, it for what it remained in prison during more than four years, and left there only after the revolution. He gave up the policy, to be concerned with culture, which he regards as the most important subject in Iran. He thus started to write and turn of films. To date, it also published seventeen books, published in more than ten languages. Some of its films were shown in more than forty countries. These ten last years, they were presented more than thousand times in international film festivals, and in 2002, it had gained 26 prices. In 2000, the Université of Boston decreed its special price to him. It belongs to the New wave of the Iranian cinema.He also taught the cinema with the members of his family, who carried out in their turn six films. Marziyeh Meshkini, his wife, received thirteen international prizes for its film the Day when I became woman , and his/her daughter Samira obtained the price of the jury to the Cannes festival in 2000. His/her more young girl Hana carried out its first film, Joie of the madness , in 2003.
Makhmalbaf also created a non-governmental organization to allow to the Afghan children of going to school to Iran; thanks to legislative modifications due to its action, he managed to send tens of thousands of Afghan children in Iranian schools.
He lives today with his family with Kabul, where he contributes to build schools and hospitals. He also helped an Afghan realizer to produce a film. His/her Samira daughter also carried out a film in Afghanistan, heading At five o'clock in the afternoon .
The cinema of Mohsen Makhmalbaf
Makhmalbaf devotes himself to several kinds, of realistic films to fantastic and with surrealism, of the minimalism to the large frescos of the daily life, with a predilection (common to the Iranian realizers) for the topics of childhood and the cinema.
The influence of Makhmalbaf on the world cinema
The Persian cinema in Afghanistan east under development, after one long period of silence. Before the September 11th, 2001, Makhmalbaf had drawn the general attention to Afghanistan with her famous film Kandahar . Kandahar was the attempt at speaking about a forgotten country. Later, Yassamin Maleknasr, Abolfazl Jalili, Samira Makhmalbaf and Siddiq Barmak took part in an important way in the Persian cinema of Afghanistan. Siddiq Barmak is also the director of the Mouvement of education of the Afghan Children (ACEM), an association which encourages the elimination of illiteracy, the culture and arts, rested by Makhmalbaf. This school trains actors and realizers for the emergent Afghan cinema.Tadjikistan, Makhmalbaf plays the same part that he played in the rebuilding of the cinema of Afghanistan post- Taliban. 1st Didar Film Festival , the first cinema festival in Tadjikistan, took place in 2004.
