Moderated
The moderated ( moderated ale uovo ) is the principal technique of painting of art used since of unmemorable times, in particular in Egypt, then by the painters of Byzantine icons, then in Europe during the Moyen-âge. It is a process of painting using the Egg yolk like Médium to bind the Pigments. One uses it on plaster or wood panels covered with many layers of levkas . Sometimes of other substances like milk, honey or various vegetable gums was also used like medium.
One uses a coating containing chalk or of plaster, when it is a question of painting on a panel out of wooden or a mural wall. At the 15th century this technique is also used on fabric.
When the Oil-base paint was invented towards the end of the Middle Ages, moderated it still continued to be employed during a certain time as an underlayer covered by a varnish with translucent or transparent oil.
This mixed transitory technique was followed by a technique of oil-base paint pure, which replaced almost completely moderated it at the 16th century.
The term moderated is also employed currently by some manufacturers to indicate the ordinary painting used for posters, and which is a cheap form of Gouache (painting with opaque water) which has nothing to do with the true one moderated with egg.
