Modena (in Italian Modena ) is a Italian city of approximately 180  000 inhabitants located in the of the same province name in Emilie-Romagna.

Economy

It is an important industrial center, especially in the automobile field (FIAT, Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Pagani, De Tomaso). The city is also known for its balsamic Vinaigre.

  • Ferrari is with Maranello to 18 km in the south of Modena
  • Maserati was created in Bologna and was repurchased by a family of Modena in 1934.

History

It is initially a Roman colony (-183, Latin name Mutina ) located on the via Emiliana . Cicéron describes it like very flourishing. It is then the theater of the confrontation between Octave and Marc-Antoine in 43 before J. - C.

It is with half destroyed at the 5th century by Attila and at the 7th century a Inondation devastates it again, but the city lives again when it becomes episcopal see.

A cathedral is built in 1099. To the same time, the emperor Othon I {{er}} gives it to the marquis Toscane. With died of the Countess Mathilde, nevertheless, Modena becomes again independent. In 1288, it is given to Obizzo d' Este. In 1452, it is set up in duchy, always for the Este, which control it until in 1796, date on which it is taken by the French.

In 1814, after having belonged to transitory the Republic cisalpine, the duchy is returned to the Habsbourg-Lorraine (heirs to Este). In 1859, the country is invaded by the Sardinia. The sovereign duke François V must exile himself in Austria.

Gastronomy

Modena is located in the Plaine Po, in the area of production of the Parmesan and the Parma ham.

Balsamic vinegar

There exist 3 principal categories of balsamic vinegar of the area of Modena:
  • balsamic vinegar of Modena
  • traditional balsamic vinegar of Modena
  • traditional balsamic vinegar of Reggio Emilia

The characteristic of the balsamic is related to the fact that it is manufactured exclusively starting from cooked wine must.

That of Modena must be produced starting from following type of vines: lambrusco, ancellotta, trebbiano, sauvignon and sgavetta, coltivati.

The traditional vinegar must undergo an ageing out of barrels of at least 12 years and often up to 25 years.
