Model of table CAL

The model of table CAL is a standard of representation of the tables in SGML/XML. It was developed within the framework of the Initiative CAL of the Department of Defense of the United States

History and raison d'être

The model of table CAL was developed by the group of piloting Industrie CAL Electronic Publishing Committee (EPC).

The sub-committee EPC, whose Harvey Bingham was copresident and a major contributor, designed the model of table CAL in 1989 - 1990. The EPC was composed representatives of services of the Industrie and Armée. Some represented the traditional agencies of impression of the military documents. Others represented organizations of electronic publication. SGML itself was new. At this time, the intention of CAL for all their technical handbooks was to use this Définition of the type of document to arrive to a neutral interworking with respect to the system between the Contenu and the structure.

The base was a minimal description and an example of table of the former specification Millet-MR.-38784B for the production of technical handbooks. The incomplete specification of the Sémantique associated with the model of table authorized too much freedom for the interpretation of the Fournisseur, and had as a consequence of the problems of interworking. SGML-open (become OASIS) probed the suppliers who implemented it to identify the differences, which constituted the first stage towards a common interpretation. The following stage was the update of the model of table CAL DTD and of semantics. Both are now available on behalf of OASIS .

Whereas one developed the implementations of the model of table CAL, a certain number of ambiguities and omissions were detected and indicated to committee EPC. The differences in interpretation led to serious problems of interworking. To overcome these differences, OASIS identified a subset of the complete model of table CAL which was highly likely to ensure the interworking among the products of the Fournisseur S of OASIS. This subset is Exchange Table Model DTD.
