Model of Seeheim

The model of Seeheim is an owner of software Architecture introduces in 1983 to structure the man-machine Interface in an interactive software. Seeheim is a town of Germany where in November 1983 a workshop was held of work organized by Eurographics on the topic " To use Interface Systems" Management; (Management systems of User interface). The model of Seeheim was proposed collectively during this meeting.

Components of the owner

Being given a user and a whole of functions (which one calls the functional Noyau), the model of Seeheim stipulates that a man-machine Interface is made up of three parts:

  • the Presentation is the layer which manages the entries and the exits; it represents the data and interprets the actions of the user.

  • the Management of the Dialog manages the sequencing of the entries and the exits, for example the sequence of the screens in an graphical interface.

  • the Model of Interfacing of the Application is the layer which is used to connect the functions and data of the functional core to the data and actions of the IHM. One often also speaks about interface of the functional core.

Role and utility

The Modèle of Seeheim is a Patron of design:

  • abstract: it does not specify how to carry out the various parts and their interconnections by using constructions available in the computer programming languages.

  • high level

: it applies to the analysis of the software to a macroscopic grain, on the level of the module, library or process. There exist abstract models moreover low level, intended for the analysis with microscopic grain, the level of the function or class.

In 1983, one of main concerns was the replacement of textual the Homme-machine interfaces by graphical interfaces. The model of Seeheim thus proposed an organization of the software which made it possible to modify the interfaces without modifying the functional cores.

In 2006, the model of Seeheim is especially recognized for its historical role, for the vocabulary which it introduced, and for the objectives of software genius of which it is made the echo. In the field of the architecture high level abstract, the Modèle of the arch is detailed and more often quoted more by the researchers. In addition, of the more detailed owners (Model-Sight-Controller, Presentation, Abstraction, Control) are closer to the concrete concerns of the programmers, and thus are more often used like reference.
