Model making
The model making is an activity of Loisir S of manufacture and model piloting of reduced (for example 1/43,1/16). One distinguishes several types of small-scale models which are described low.
Model making strictly speaking in addition implies the codified respect of certain scales, rules or procedures, which allows exchanges or comparisons between the achievements of amateurs of the same kind (what excludes certain designs from nature more artistic or imaginative, such as the cribs, cathedrals in matches… or animals robotized, collections of headstocks… etc).
The art of the Figurine, the model making of the movable sound , doll's house can be classified in the field of the maquettism. This last existed already at the beginning of the XIXe century and was now largely standardized on the scale 1/12ème with a growing success. This mode of maquettism is often indicated by the term of Miniature S or miniature windows .
One distinguishes the static model making from exposure (that some indicate like the maquettism ) and subjects comprising of the elements of animation , in the main thing or accessory.
Often, several types of model makings can be combined: for example, a railway network primarily made up of ways and vehicles (locomotive…) be often accompanied by stations, buildings, trees and other accessories of decoration, including cars and trucks, characters and animals, rivers, bridges, boats and other boats…
It will be noted that, in the majority of the cases, passion for a kind of model making (for example, railway model making) is accompanied by a parallel passion for the reference in real size (for example, trains and the world of the railwaymen).
In the same way, the majority of the amateurs arrived via the Jouet and/or of childhood. This filiation produces effects of compression symbolic system between the toy and model making, even if the amateurs often make the distinction.
The principal forms of model making are:
- automobile Model making
- railway Model making
- air Model making
- naval Model making
- Model making figurines

A model can be built starting from a Kit ready to go up available in the trade. It is as from the years 1950 that one saw appearing, initially in England then a little everywhere in the world, a true industry of the models out of plastic with low costs (injected or thermo-formed) with innumerable marks like Airfix in 1953 and Heller in the years 1960. This type of model did not cease improving in quality, nevertheless certain types of model making use nobler materials like brass (railway) and/or it wood (marine) closer to actual materials.
The plastic models of the economic maquettism made péricliter the model out of paperboard (or cuttings) sails very about it in Northern Europe and developed in particular in Germany. In fact, they perdurèrent in the countries of the Soviet Bloc due to raw material shortage (East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Soviet Union).
A tendency of evolution of the maquettism is the hyperrealism which consists in not representing clean and smooth objects but of the objects having undergone wears and stains of use: mud traces on the vehicles, painting soiled of the buildings, traces of exhaust and impacts on the planes, traces of smoke on the engines, etc
It is with the quality of this artificial ageing obtained by original methods that one recognizes the true artists of the maquettism.
Another tendency is to present the models in their environment of use in the form of Diorama. The diorama is also the occasion to implement materials of all kinds to accurately represent ground, plants, buildings, characters, etc to emphasize the central model itself.
A last tendency more particularly relates to the navy with veil and consists in building models frames , sometimes not of it bordered, in order to represent in its least details the technique used for the construction of the old ships, inter alia the linerships. This model making of a high degree of accuracy is called Modélisme of Arsenal.
A big step of the construction of a realistic model is the research of documentation: iconography, plans, etc Certains editors specialized on this market and market compilations of information on a model given in the form of Monographie.
