Modane

Modane is a common French, located in the department of the Savoy and the area the Rhone-Alps.

Geography

Modane is a city located in the the Alps in Savoy, at the edge of the Arc and with the doors of high the Maurienne.

It shelters a international Gare by where forward the Train S in provenence of Turin, via the railway Tunnel of the Mount-Cenis, and bound for Chambéry, as well as TGV with destination or coming from Milan. The network upstream is managed by the FS ( Ferrovie dello Stato ), the downstream part and the station being under management of the SNCF.

Modane is also the French outlet of the Tunnel of Frejus, one of the principal road passages transalpine with the Tunnel of Mont Blanc.

Places and monuments

the fountain in front of the town hall (place of the town hall) is classified historic building. It goes back to 1572, but was moved during alteration work.

the leaning house : The leaning house is on the road of Modane with Valfréjus. It belongs to the army, with S. NR. C. F and with the commune of Modane. Formerly the leaning house was called " the poudrière". It was used to shelter a powder stock intended to destroy the tunnel in the event of war. The house was made out of dry stone. In 1939, one overcame the construction of a reinforced concrete blockhouse. In 1944 the Germans dynamited the railway tunnel and the dry stone-built house crumbled. The blockhouse flew on 30 meters. After it fell down for finally being crushed and to be inserted in the ground and there remained intact. When one returns in the leaning house balance is lost. To go it is necessary to cling: if not one slips. When one leaves this building one is glad to find the dry land. The leaning house belongs extremely to the association of the museum Saint-Gobain.

the Fort of Replaton : Built to defend the entry of the railway tunnel at the end of the XIXe century, this fort of the Serré type of River is not visited. Strolls at the beginning of Loutraz (30 ') is worth the blow as well as the glance on the illuminations of the fort the night.

SFTRF, French company of the Road tunnel of Frejus whose head office is located on the platform of the tunnel of Frejus has Modane. This company manages the road tunnel of Frejus as well as the totality of the highway of Maurienne (Aiton; Platform of the tunnel with Modane).

International Transport Jacquemmoz, Shipping company of which head office is located at Modane, founded at the end of the years 1950 it saw its vehicle fleet very strongly touched by the mud flow of Saint-Antione in 1987. It had 16 trucks and during the flow mud, it lost 13 of them. The company has today 6 agencies of exploitation: Modane, Holy Remy of maurienne, Montmélian (Chambéry), Corbas (Lyon), Andrézieux-Bouthéon (Holy Etienne) and Puiseaux (Montargis). The transport capacity is of 260 vehicles, semitrailers and recent trucks trailers, used in family company accompanied by 330 collaborators.
