Modalohr

The Modalohr is a type of Wagon railway conceived and manufactured by the French company Lohr Industrie. It is also the name of the subsidiary company created to manage this park of coaches.

This system was conceived to answer the political request for Ferroutage French. Indeed, the transport of trucks and trailers standard on coaches able to respect the railway Gabarit European requires a platform very close to the Rail. But the specialists in the SNCF indeed refused to use the system RoLa, widespread elsewhere in Europe: flattened flat wagons provided with bogies with 4 axles with " small roues".

The solution then existing was the " coach-pocket Kangaroo " in which the Semi-remorque is charged using a crane.

To avoid this constraint, Lohr built a coach with flattened floor having a mobile cradle placed between the Bogie S of the coach. This cradle swivels of 30° to allow the loading level of a trailer or of two tractors per coach. The coaches are presented per inseparable pair or triplette in exploitation.

The defenders of the system propose his safety which had with the use of standard bogies whereas its detractors note that it is more expensive and the flexibility of the traditional system " does not have; small roues" , because:

  • the loading of a tractor and its trailer requires to take down them,
  • the influence necessary to the operations of loading and unloading is important,
  • the mechanism of swivelling is source of breakdowns and delay.

The experiment alpine Rail expressway does not have for the moment be convincing, nevertheless a new experiment of Rail expressway was launched in September 2007 between the Luxembourg and Boulou with the same type of coaches.
